Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. [SHELVOCKE, GEORGE]. A voyage round the world by the way of the great South Sea, perform'd in the years 1719, 20, 21, 22, in the Speedwell of London, of 24, Guns and 100 Men, (under His Majesty's Commission to cruize on the Spaniards in the late War with the Spanish Crown) till she was cast away on the Island of Juan Fernandes, in May 1720; and afterwards continu'd in the Recovery, the Jesus Maria and Sacra Familia, &c. By Capt. George Shelvocke, Commander of the Speedwell, Recovery, &c. in this Expedition. London: Printed for J. Senex, at the Globe against St. Dunstan's Church, Fleetstreet; W. and J. Innys, at the Prince's-Arms in St. Paul's Church-Yard; and J. Osborn and T. Longman, at the Ship in Pater-Noster Row, MDCCXXVI. [1726]. FIRST EDITION. Leather-bound; hardcover; octavo (20 x 12.5 x 4.5 cm); pp. [8], xxiv, [4], 468. Signatures: a⁶ a-b⁸ **a² B-2G⁸ 2H². Handsomely bound in contemporary full panelled calf; spine in compartments with red morocco lettering-piece; initial and terminal blanks; folding twin-hemisphere map and four engraved plates (two folding), plates signed: I. Pine. With a dedication to James, Earl of Berkeley and the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty. Head- and tail-pieces; decorative initials; printed shoulder-notes and foot-notes. Condition: VERY GOOD. Collated complete. Binding tight and secure, with slight rubbing to spine head. Interior well-preserved, some brown staining to the inner margin of first few leaves, a² with a very small corner tear, endleaves slightly creased, indistinct previous owner signature to head of title. Scarce thus. Notes: Rare first edition of one of the most famous buccaneering voyages - the account of Shelvocke's privateering adventures through the Pacific and with what Cowan calls "the fullest account of California, the natives and their features, of any of the old voyagers." A privately-funded privateering voyage which sought to emulate the success of Woodes Rogers' highly successful voyage of 1708-1711. Shelvocke commanded the Speedwell, whilst John Clipperton commanded the Success. Together they were involved on raids against Spanish shipping on the west coast of South America. Shelvocke then parted from Clipperton to conduct his own raids in Peru and to sail up the coast to Cabo San Lucas, where he remained for several months, writing one of the earliest descriptions of the Indians of Baja California. He was also one of the first men to suggest the possibility of finding gold in California. The map depicts California as an island and two of the plates show natives of California. It has been suggested that Shevlocke's account of the passage around Cape Horn, where a sailor killed an albatross, inspired Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner. [Cowan pp.581-2; Hill 1557; Sabin 80158; ESTC T86937].…
