Añadir al carritoNeff, Emery, 1892-1983. Carlyle and Mill. Mystic and Utilitarian. New York: Columbia, 1924, 334pp., worn but good dark blue cloth BUT very heavy foxing on endpapers and foredges. INSCRIBED by Neff to Harrison Ross Steeves. Neff was a Professor of Comparative Literature at Columbia and author of books on Victorian literature, poetry, and the relationship of literature and history. In a 1954 radio broadcast Clifton Fadiman recalled Harrison Ross Steeves (1881-1981) as one of his favorite professors from college days: " I learned one thing from Steeves I think, and not a fact, not a theory; I learned merely that an English sentence could be both complicated and clear. He spoke always with the elegance and perspicuity of sentences, let us say, by Henry James. When he was halfway through a sentence you felt sure he would never come out alive at the other end, but always he did it with no dangling participles, and every word in its proper place. From that moment on I began to see what a wonderful thing a sentence could be, and how much you could do with it, and how worthwhile it was to try to begin it properly and end it properly." (reported by Steeves' nephew in Columbia College Today, 2000).…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - 'Carlyle and Mill; An Introduction to Victorian Thought' offers a profound examination of the intellectual foundations of the 19th century through the contrasting lives and philosophies of Thomas Carlyle and John Stuart Mill. Emery Edward Neff meticulously explores how these two giants of English literature and thought represented the dualities of their age-balancing Carlyle's heroic romanticism and spiritual depth against Mill's rigorous utilitarianism and radical liberalism. This scholarly work serves as an essential guide to understanding the transition from the Enlightenment to the modern era. By analyzing their distinct responses to the Industrial Revolution, social reform, and individual liberty, Neff provides readers with a vivid portrait of Victorian Britain's quest for meaning in a rapidly changing world. The text bridges the gap between literary criticism and intellectual history, making it an invaluable resource for students of English literature, political science, and philosophy. Through 'Carlyle and Mill; An Introduction to Victorian Thought', readers gain a deeper appreciation for the voices that defined a century and continue to influence Western social thought today. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - 'Carlyle and Mill: Mystic and Utilitarian' provides a profound comparative study of two of the most influential figures in nineteenth-century British intellectual history. Emery Neff explores the diverging paths of Thomas Carlyle, the passionate mystic, and John Stuart Mill, the rigorous utilitarian, tracing their individual contributions to the social and philosophical landscape of the Victorian era.The work examines how these two thinkers, despite their contrasting worldviews, sought to address the pressing issues of the Industrial Revolution and the changing nature of society. Neff delves into their personal backgrounds, their interactions, and the evolution of their respective ideologies. By juxtaposing Carlyle's transcendentalism and Mill's empirical logic, the book illuminates the broader tensions between romanticism and rationalism that defined the period. This scholarly analysis offers essential insights for readers interested in the development of modern political thought, social reform, and the literary-philosophical intersections of the 1800s. It remains a critical resource for understanding the intellectual foundation of the modern West through the lens of its most prominent Victorian voices. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - 'Carlyle and Mill' is a profound scholarly investigation into the lives, works, and intellectual divergence of two of the nineteenth century's most influential thinkers: Thomas Carlyle and John Stuart Mill. Emery Neff explores the philosophical friction between Carlyle's spiritual, transcendental approach to social reform and Mill's rational, utilitarian framework. By situating these two figures within the rapidly shifting landscape of the Industrial Revolution, the work illuminates the core tensions of Victorian England, from the rise of democracy to the struggle for individual liberty in a mass society. The work provides a detailed analysis of how these men responded to the social crises of their era, offering a comparative study that reveals as much about the age as it does about the authors themselves. The text traces their early friendship and eventual intellectual parting, serving as a dual biography that highlights the competing currents of Romanticism and Empiricism. Readers interested in English literature, political science, and the history of ideas will find 'Carlyle and Mill' to be an essential resource for understanding the foundations of modern social thought. This study remains a significant contribution to the understanding of the Victorian period, capturing the spirit of a time when the world was being reshaped by new economic and moral realities. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
