Añadir al carritoNo binding. Condición: good. NEW YORK SEMI-WEEKLY TRIBUNE, March 22, 1861 * History about to be made* Focus on Fort Sumter Much of the front page is taken up with reports concerning the coming Civil War, with first column heads: "THE SOUTHERN FORTS" "Sumter Not Yet Evacuated" "Formidable Works Behind the Fort" and also: "The Pro-Slavery Rebellion".Page 2 begins with: "The Pro-Slavery Rebellion" "From South Carolina" "The Evacuation of Sumter" and more.Eight pages, never bound nor trimmed so it folds out to a single sheet, minor rubbing & wear, generally in good condition. Background: The headings from the March 22, 1861, issue of the New York Semi-Weekly Tribune capture the United States at a knife-edge brink of catastrophe, precisely three weeks before the opening shots of the American Civil War at Fort Sumter on April 12. Edited by the staunchly abolitionist Horace Greeley, the paper's blunt framing of the secession crisis as "The Pro-Slavery Rebellion" is highly significant because it cut through contemporary political rhetoric to explicitly identify the preservation of human bondage as the driving force behind Southern secession. At the moment this issue went to press, the nation was gripped by agonizing suspense over whether the newly inaugurated President Abraham Lincoln would peaceably evacuate Major Robert Anderson's federal garrison in Charleston Harbor or risk war by attempting a resupply. The Tribune's reporting on the "Formidable Works Behind the Fort" detailed the aggressive Confederate military mobilization under General P.G.T. Beauregard, highlighting the literal ring of artillery closing in on the federal stronghold. This specific snapshot of history illuminates how the media documented the final, fragile moments of American peace, showcasing a narrative of imminent conflict where delayed evacuation and escalating Southern militarism made the impending bloodiest war in American history entirely inevitable.…

Añadir al carritoAn eccentric gadfly of the left, Woodrow Wyatt had recently had a falling out with the Labour Party weekly Tribune, for which he had written in the past, over his attack on TGWU secretary Frank Cousins. The "snake-dancing" and banzai references relate to the curious demonstrations which had recently caused the cancellation of President Eisenhower's visit to Japan. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961. Sheet size: 192 x 140 mm. Pen and black ink with blue pencil crayon on wove paper. Stamped on verso for publication in the Daily Mail, 17 June 1960, and with pencil reproduction instructions recto.…

Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Good. No Jacket. On offer is the quaint, interesting diary of Agnes Stanwood Harrington (1886-1969) of Brunswick, Maine. Agnes was born to Sea Captain William S. Harrington and Fannie A. Skolfield. In 1915, Agnes married William Perley Drowns (1889-1944). He worked as a Brakeman in the rail transport industry. Agnes and William lived in Nashua, New Hampshire and had four children, though only three survived infancy. At the time she kept this diary, Agnes is still living in Brunswick, according to her notation in the back of the journal, but it seems she moves to New Hampshire in late September, and begins seeing "W" (likely William, her future husband). Agnes kept this diary fairly consistently throughout 1913, beginning when she was 26-years-old (she turned 27 on May 19th). Entries describe her day-to-day activities and shed light on the life of a young, unmarried, working woman in early 20th century New England. The following excerpts will give a feel for her experiences: "Stormy. Worked all day. Went to Military Ball in evening with A. S. C Doris came at night" [Apr 11, 1913]. "My birthday. Sadie gave me a box of stationary. May a pair of stockings. Sadie and Helen and I went to pictures" [May 19, 1913]. "Fair. Worked all day. Henry H & I went to Baltic in evening for circus" [Aug 8, 1913]. "Fair and very warm. Left B for N. H. Got in N. H. For the evening had a fine trip" [Sept 27, 1913]. "Had electric light the first time Friday night Sept 5th. [Memo off Sept 6th entry] Fair and very warm. U and a friend and I went to Stark Park in afternoon" [Sept 28, 1913]. "Fair. Went to work in the morning in the shoe shop for the first time. Made $1.00" [September 29, 1913]. "Weighed 121 lbs Sat Sept 27, 1913 when I go to Manchester" [Memoranda]. "Cloudy and foggy. Worked all fore-noon. W and I went over to the city and di some shopping" [Oct 11, 1913]. For a social historian, this little diary offers a glimpse into a world long gone. It certainly paints a picture of the life of a young woman in urban New England at this time which would be of interest to Women s Studies researchers. Measuring 4.0 inches by 2.75 inches, this small diary contains 91 pages and is approximately 80% complete. The red leatherette cover and binding are in good condition as are the pages. The handwriting is legible. The original pencil is still in its holder in the spine. ; Manuscripts; 32mo 4" - 5" tall; 91 pages; Signed by Author. Signed by Author(s).…

Añadir al carrito4 volumes. The most detailed and complete edition of Bor's history of the Revolt against Spain in the Low Countries from 1555 to 1600. Pieter Christiaensz. Bor (1559-1635) was a notary, but he dedicated his life to compiling primary sources, doing historical research, and writing the very detailed, precise and reliable history of the Dutch Revolt during the second half of the sixteenth century. In this edition four supplements (noted on the title-pages) and new registers are added to Bor's chronicle-like account of the Dutch War in 37 "books" in four volumes. The supplements contain even more sources and facts about the period which underline its reputation of the book being the leading work about the subject. The of the four volumes contains a nearly identical engraved frontispiece, with only the indication of the volume revised. The text is enriched by the addition of 80 plates. These include four identical portraits of the author, other portraits of important historical figures and 39 double-page plates of, for example, the siege of Haarlem (1572-73) in volume 1 or the famous plate of a beached whale in volume 4. These plates were produced by Jan Luyken and Romeyn de Hooghe, among others, and the portrait of the Bor is based on a painting by Frans Hals. The bindings of volumes 1 and 2 are a bit more soiled than those of volumes 3 and 4. The spines are slightly damaged from use, without affecting the overall integrity of the binding. Volume 1 are slightly browned, the others only very slightly foxed. An impressive, illustrated historical work in very good condition.l Sloos, Warfare and the age of printing, 12134; Van Eeghen & Van der Kellen 9. Contemporary blind-tooled vellum with remnants of green ties. With the joint device of the publishers (with their initials) on each title-page, four nearly identical engraved frontispieces and a total of 80 engraved plates (including 4 identical portraits of the author and 39 double-page plates). Pages: [28], 1006, [10], 188; [8], 231, 234-242, 241-672, 679-994, [8], 128; [8], 532, [6], 529-690, 693-896, [8], 28; [8], 419, 432-512, 517-692, 14, 16, [188] pp. …
