Norton & Company in 2006. Jeff Brouws's panoramic lens captures the quiet, haunting desolation of the modern American highway and its surrounding commercial ruins. The monograph documents the transformation of the American landscape from local, vernacular roots into a homogeneous, corporate terrain of franchised spaces, discarded sites, and suburban sprawl. Red paper-covered boards with blind-stamped black spine lettering secure the heavy, high-gloss paper stock printed in Italy by Mondadori Printing, Verona. The accompanying photographic dust jacket features a landscape view of Highway 196 in Rowley Junction, Utah, on the front panel and a Minneapolis strip mall parking lot on the rear. William L. Fox contributes a substantial introductory essay analyzing the visual and social realities of de-industrialization. Mondadori Printing in Verona, Italy, executed the color-separation and lithographic printing of the offset-lithographic color plates, capturing the nuanced lighting of night-time parking lots and misty, fog-shrouded roadsides. The academic study of American geography and post-war suburban development finds a visual reference in these pages.
