In the Shadow of Our Ancestors explores the rich history of the indigenous peoples of North America and leaves us in awe of their stunning achievements and inventions: * The Great Law of Peace -- The ideals, words and symbols of the Iroquois Confederacy inspired the governments of the New World to form democracies that recognized, in their constitutions, the rights of all people * Potatoes -- The lowly potato, a staple food of Natives for almost 15,000 years, was unknown outside the Americas until Europeans arrived; now, with almost 4000 varieties, it is the fourth most-consumed agricultural product in the world * Sacagawea -- The settlement of western North America was inspired and influenced by the results of the Lewis and Clark expedition in the early 1800s, with the journey's success made possible because of a Native woman named Sacagawea, whose presence paved the way for the explorers to be seen as a peaceful party.…

Hardback. Condición: Good. For centuries the seas around Scotland were notorious for shipwrecks. Mariners' only aids were skill, luck, and single coal-fire light on the east coast, which was usually extinguished by rain. In 1786 the Northern Lighthouse Trust was established, with Robert Stevenson appointed as chief engineer a few years later. In this engrossing book, Bella Bathhurst reveals that the Stevensons not only supervised the construction of the lighthouses under often desperate conditions but also perfected a design of precisely chiseled interlocking granite blocks that would withstand the enormous waves that batter these stone pillars. The same Stevensons also developed the lamps and lenses of the lights themselves, which "sent a gleam across the wave" and prevented countless ships from being lost at sea. While it is the writing of Robert Louis Stevenson that brought fame to the family name, this mesmerizing account shows how his extraordinary ancestors changed the shape of the Scotland coast against incredible odds and with remarkable technical ingenuity.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Biblical Storytelling At Its Best Helen Bruch Pearson examines the biblical witness of: Tamar Rahab Ruth Bathsheba Mary, the mother of Jesus Join Pearson as she fills in the gaps and helps history become her-story. Helen Pearson has engaged stories of Jesus' female ancestors with great care, pondering biblical texts, biblical scholarship, and traditions of midrash. She shares her discoveries in the form of lively narratives. The result is a Bible study that is much needed and will be valued by people who yearn to discover the Bible's most hidden treasures. --Mary Elizabeth Mullino Moore, Professor of Religion and Education, Director, Women in Theology and Ministry, Candler School of Theology, Emory University Insightful and provocative, these studies of Jesus' foremothers take the reader into the lives of five remarkable women. Pearson helps us see how these women who had little social power nevertheless made decisive contributions to the life of the Israelite people at critical junctures, even as they found ways to secure lives of dignity and justice for themselves. Mother Roots helps us understand why these unconventional and controversial women are lifted up for special notice in Matthew's genealogy of Jesus. --Carol A. Newsom, Professor of Old Testament, Candler School of Theology, Emory University Helen Bruch Pearson is a retreat, workshop, and seminar leader; guest teacher and preacher; designer and leader of worship and liturgical events. Emerita Professor of Theology, Candler School of Theology of Emory University, Atlanta, GA, Pearson is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ. Along with many articles and curriculum studies, she is also the author of the popular Bible study Do What You Have the POWER to Do: Studies of Six New Testament Women.…

Paperback. Condición: Fair. "Meaty, well-written." --Kirkus Reviews "Timely and informative." --The New York Times Book Review "By far the best book I have ever read on humanity's deep history."  --E. O. Wilson, biologist and author of The Ants and On Human Nature Nicholas Wade's articles are a major reason why the science section has become the most popular, nationwide, in the New York Times. In his groundbreaking Before the Dawn, Wade reveals humanity's origins as never before--a journey made possible only recently by genetic science, whose incredible findings have answered such questions as: What was the first human language like? How large were the first societies, and how warlike were they? When did our ancestors first leave Africa, and by what route did they leave? By eloquently solving these and numerous other mysteries, Wade offers nothing less than a uniquely complete retelling of a story that began 500 centuries ago.…

Hardback. Condición: Good. Believe it or not, our DNA is almost exactly the same as that of our ancestors. While scientific advances in agriculture, medicine, and technology have protected man, to some degree, from dangers such as starvation, illness, and exposure, the fact remains that our cave-dwelling cousins were considerably healthier than we are. Our paleolithic ancestors did not suffer from heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, or obesity. In fact, a good deal of what we view as normal aging is a modern condition that is more akin to disease than any natural state of growing older. Our predecessors were incomparably better nourished than we are, and were incredibly physically fit. And certainly none of them ever craved a doughnut, let alone tasted one. In fact, the human preference for sweet tastes and fatty textures was developed in an environment where such treats were rare, and signaled dense, useful energy. This once-helpful adaptation is the downfall of many a dieter today. It's what makes it hard to resist fats and sweets, especially when they are all around us.We are not living as we were built to live. Our genes were forged in an environment where activity was mandatory--you were active or you starved or were eaten. This created strong selective pressure for genes encoding a smart, physically adept individual capable of very high activity levels. Humans are among the most active of species, and we carry energetically expensive brains to boot. Our energy expenditures rank high among all animals. At least they once did. The New Evolution Diet by Arthur De Vany, PhD is a roadmap back to the better health our ancestors once enjoyed. By eliminating modern foods, including carbohydrates, dairy, and all processed foods from our diets, we can undo much of the damage caused by our modern food environment. The plan is based on three simple principles: 1. Enjoy the pleasure of food and do not count or restrict calories. Eat three satisfying meals a day filled with non-starchy vegetables, fruits, and high-quality, lean proteins2. Do not starve yourself, but do go hungry episodically, for brief periods, to promote a low fasting blood insulin level and increase metabolic fat-burning. 3. Exercise less, not more, but with more playfulness and intensity. The goal is to create a strong body with a high resting metabolism and a large physiologic capacity to move through life easily--not to burn calories.…
