While positive in some aspects and places, he particularly enjoyed Boston, Cincinnati and Niagara Falls, ultimately his curiosity and excitement at seeing this new civilisation turned to a critique of the culture he saw - particularly the slavery, corruption and attitudes of those he met. Unsurprisingly this book was met with a hostile reaction from readers in the US. Dickens? writings are always a classy and welcome addition to any bookshelf.
