Copertina morbida. Titolo originale dell'opera: «Misery». Traduzione di Tullio Dobner. Supplemento a "La Repubblica". Brossura editoriale, coperta in cartoncino flessibile plastificato opaco con alette, illustrata a colori.

Hardcover. Condición: Very good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very good. Second printing [stated]. xii, 559, [5] pages. Includes Illustrations. Afterword, Acknowledgments, Sources and Notes, and Index. Daniel Mark Epstein (born October 25, 1948) is an American poet, dramatist, and biographer. His poetry has been noted for its erotic and spiritual lyricism, as well as its power-in several dramatic monologues-in capturing crucial moments of American history. While he has continued to publish poetry he is more widely known for his biographies of Nat King Cole, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Bob Dylan and Abraham Lincoln, and his radio plays, "Star of Wonder," and "The Two Menorahs," which have become holiday mainstays on National Public Radio. The Lincolns: Portrait of a Marriage (2008) was named one of the ten best books of the year by the Chicago Sun Times and the Wall Street Journal, whose reviewer remarked it "may be the best Lincoln book in a generation." The Lincolns' ascent to the White House brought both dazzling power and the slow, secret unraveling of the couple's unique bond. The Lincolns' ascent to the White House brought both dazzling power and the slow, secret unraveling of the couple's unique bond. After the death of their little boy, not a year after Lincoln took office, Mary turned for solace to spirit mediums, but her grief drove her to the edge of madness. In the end, there was little left of the Lincolns' relationship but their enduring devotion to each other and to their surviving children.

Cloth, large 8vo, 28 cm, xvi, 250 pp, 70 plates. From the blurb: "During the summer of 1638 the Reverend Jose Glover set off across the Atlantic for New England with a printing press, a supply of type and a stock of paper, with the intention of setting up a press in the infant colony to serve church and state. Although Glover died during the voyage, Stephen Daye, a barely literate locksmith who had accompanied him, and Daye's son took over the establishment of the press in the grounds of Harvard College. The first item printed in America was an 'Oath of Allegiance to the King', and the first book, the 'Bay Psalm Book', was completed in 1640. The Printed Book in America traces the history of American printing from these unsteady beginnings to the present day, paying particular attention to major figures such as Benjamin Franklin and Isaiah Thomas in the earlier period and Daniel Berkeley Updike, Bruce Rogers and Frederic W. Goudy in the present century. This monumental survey is the first book to compress into a single volume a comprehensive account of the development, variety and quality of American typography. It pays particular attention to private and special presses which, building upon the heritage of the past, have carried forward the traditions and enriched the aesthetic achievements of American printing and bookmaking."Contents : The Colonial Period : Stephen and Matthew Daye, Samuel Green , Marmaduke Johnson , William Bradford , Benjamin Franklin , Ephrata Press , Christopher Sower , James Parker , John Green , William Parks , Jonas Green , William Goddard , Colonial Women , Binny and Ronaldson , Isaiah Thomas , Mathew Carey ; The Nineteenth Century and into The Twentieth Century: The House of Harper , Joel Munsell , Theodore Low De Vinne , An Historical Retrospective , Boston, to the 's, Thomas Bird Mosher , Stone & Kimball , Copeland & Day , Way & Williams , Elbert Hubbard , The Elston Press , Walter Gilliss ; The Renaissance In American Printing: Daniel Berkeley Updike Bruce Rogers , Frederic W. Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Hardcover, viii + 178 pages, outline chronologies & select bibliography & index, NOT ex-library. An attractive copy with clean pages, unmarked text, firm binding. A barcode sticker inside rear board. Boards show signs of regular shelfwear, a small gentle indentation to the upper front edge, short creases to spine ends. Issued without a dust jacket. -- The defeat of King Harold at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 remains one of the major landmarks in English history, heralding the establishment of the line of Norman kings and their Angevin successors that ruled the country for centuries to come. The pattern of conquest and settlement in England is well charted, but the Norman impact in Wales, Ireland and Scotland has generally been analyzed within the limits of national history alone. In this overview of the Anglo-Norman period, David Walker examines Norman influences in all parts of the British Isles as a unified theme. The book opens with an explanation of the background to events in 1066, and discusses the successful military campaigns of William the Conqueror and his heirs in subduing Anglo-Saxon England and establishing political legitimacy and loyalty in the conquered realm. The author shows, however, that the experience of England cannot be seen as the model for the rest of the British Isles. England was a defeated country which the Normans could exploit at will, but in Wales and Ireland they were denied conquest on that scale and their tenure was frequently challenged. In Scotland the Anglo-Normans were the allies of the ruling dynasty, dependent upon patronage, not on force of arms. In each of these areas, the nature of Norman involvement was determined by the interplay between the political interest of the newcomers and the particular responses of the region. The diversity of the Norman impact is explored in all its aspects, from the government of Church and state, and society at large, to military and ecclesiastical architecture. This book should be useful for students interested in the complex nature of Norman conquest and settlement in the British Isles. -- Contents: 1. The Norman Impact 2. The Conquest of England 3. The Resistance of the Welsh 4. The Scottish Alliance 5. The Irish Intransigence 6. Architecture: Military and Ecclesiastical.
