The long exposures self portraits required the photographer (who is sitting for the photos) to stay still until the end of the photo exposure time. This waiting time belongs to contemplation - a concept Marcio Faustino Santos has for his slow cameras to oppose the rush, efficiency and immediate tendency of our time, which forbid the ["unproductive"] contemplating time.
