He wrote: "What do we know.of the world and the universe about us? Our means of receiving impressions are absurdly few, and our notions of surrounding objects infinitely narrow. We see things only as we are constructed to see them, and can gain no idea of their absolute nature. With five feeble senses, we pretend to comprehend the boundlessly complex cosmos." H.P. Lovecraft, From Beyond, (1920). What exists beyond our primitive senses: -Of Smell?-Of Sight?-Of Hearing?-Of Touch?-Of Taste? Are there things that exist that we simply cannot see, because our senses cannot see them? Such as many of the dark entities that populate Lovecraft's (and potentially our) universe? Or parallel dimensions that, even were we to see them, we could no more comprehend them, than an ant our own activities?Or do things appear in plain sight that appear in one fashion to our eyes, but are different in their true nature? Could a "Men In Black"--hiding aliens where we would never think about looking for them?Lovecraft did not write his stories against the backdrop of the commonplace. Neither did he invest the unique creatures who populated his tales with predictable human qualities or simple feral motivations. Lovecraft's worlds were atypical, relatively unknown to human beings, foreboding and inhospitable. His uncommon beasts, who were old when the Earth was young, set apart his work from others and heightened the uncanny ambiance of the tales.
