Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - In January 1154, a Muslim scholar handed a Christian king a map of the world, and left part of it deliberately blank. You were taught somewhere along the way that not knowing is something to cover. That a gap in what you understand is a verdict on you. That when someone asks and you are not sure, the safe move is to sound certain anyway. This is the story of a man who spent his life doing the opposite, and made something extraordinary out of it. Muhammad al-Idrisi was born in Ceuta around 1100 into a family that had once claimed a caliphate and by then owned a house. He studied in Cordoba, walked the roads of three continents, and at nearly forty accepted an invitation from Roger II of Sicily, a Norman king who had grown up speaking Arabic because the men who ran his island did. For sixteen years the two of them sat down together most mornings and assembled the world out of other people's testimony, by one hard rule: where the reports agreed, they kept them; where the reports differed, they threw them out. What survived that rule became the most accurate map anyone would make for three hundred years. This is narrative history, told as a story rather than a survey, and it is honest about what the record can and cannot supply.- Learn a working method for telling a true account from a merely confident one, and start using it on everything you read- Find the exact place where careful people stop being careful, and learn to catch yourself standing in it- See why a map that admitted where it stopped outlived every map that pretended to be complete- Watch a friendship that every ideology of its century called impossible hold for sixteen years and produce something neither man could have made alone- Come away able to say the three words you have been avoiding, and mean them as a strengthThis is a book for anyone who has ever been asked a question they could not honestly answer, and felt the pull to answer anyway. The silver was melted within a decade. The rule the two of them wrote is still the only one that works.Open to the first page. The rest is still out there.…
