About The Editor: Theodore Baker (18511934) was an American musicologist known for his pioneering research on Native American music, especially the Seneca tribe, which formed the basis of his 1882 dissertation. He studied in Leipzig and earned a doctorate in 1881. Upon returning to the U.S., he became literary editor at G. Schirmer (18921926), translating major music texts and contributing to Musical Quarterly. He authored Baker's Dictionary of Musical Terms and the influential Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians. After retirement, he moved to Leipzig for his wife's health. She died in 1934; Baker died shortly after in Dresden at age 83.
