Structure and setting. 4. Characters. 5. Diction and dialogue. 6. General camparisons. 7. The achievement of Tom Stoppard. Bibliography…. Tom Stoppard was born Thomas Straussler on July 3, 1937 in Zlin, Czechoslovakia. One can consider him as a post absurdist and his drama post-modernist. In his drama one can see a coherent, gradual and serious concern for human values and these values are very badly required after the two wars. His drama doesn't lose itself to despair but soars above and assert certain human values which are basically lacking in modern world and heralds a new hope. He broadens the boundaries of comedy to accommodate his own type of drama which is a mixture of comedy, farce and which is a mixture of comedy, farce and which earned a name Stoppardian. He experimented with techniques like cubism, montage and collage. Tom Stoppard has established himself as one of the leading new playwrights. His contribution to modern British drama has earned him a permanent place and name. His play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead was so successful that it had earned him a well over 300 thousand pounds. (jacket).
