Hardcover. Condición: New. Language: English. About The Book : It is not the intention of this introduction to psychology to discuss the scientific or philosophical conceptions of psychology, or even to make a survey of the investigations and their results. What this little book attempts is rather to introduce the reader to the…principal thoughts underlying present-day experimental psychology, leaving out many facts and methods which would be necessary for a thorough study of the subject. To omit all mention of experimental methods and their results is at the present day impossible. Yet we only need to consider a comparatively small number of results of the first importance in order to comprehend the basal principles of the new psychology. About The Author : Wilhelm Maximilian Wundt (1832 1920) was a German physiologist, philosopher, and professor, known today as one of the fathers of modern psychology. Wundt, who distinguished psychology as a science from philosophy and biology, was the first person ever to call himself a psychologist. He is widely regarded as the "father of experimental psychology". In 1879, at University of Leipzig, Wundt founded the first formal laboratory for psychological research. This marked psychology as an independent field of study. By creating this laboratory he was able to establish psychology as a separate science from other disciplines. He also formed the first academic journal for psychological research, Philosophische Studien (from 1881 to 1902), set up to publish the institute's research. A survey published in American Psychologist in 1991 ranked Wundt's reputation as first for "all-time eminence" based on ratings provided by 29 American historians of psychology. Rudolf Pintner (1884-1942) was born in England and received the M.A. from Edinburgh in 1906. He studied next at Leipzig between 1909 and 1911, receiving the Ph.D. in 1913. He moved to America and, after a short stay at the University of Toledo, taught at The Ohio State University between 1913 and 1921, and went from there to Columbia University where he remained for the rest of his career. Like Cattell and Münsterberg, Pintner easily transitioned between German academic psychology and applied psychology in the United States. He began his career as a translator of German psychological works, including Wundt's Introduction to Psychology (the 1912 distillation of the Outline), Kerschensteiner's The Idea of the Industrial School, Schulze's Experimental Psychology and Pedagogy, and, with the philosopher Emil Wilm, Otto Klemm's History of Psychology.
