Kinloch proved inadequate, resulting in their withdrawal. Consequently, the Gurkhas, encountering no opposition, seized control of Kathmandu. This excerpt furnishes historical insights and geographic particulars, establishing the groundwork for delving into the grammar of the Lepcha language. About The Author: George Byres Mainwaring (18251893) was born in Banda, Bengal, India, to George Mainwaring and Isabella Byers. Educated at Mr Tulloch's Academy in Aberdeen and Wimbledon near London, he joined the 16th Bengal Native Infantry at 17. Notable for his military service, he participated in various campaigns, earning medals and promotions, ultimately reaching the rank of Lieutenant General. His affinity for Lepcha culture led him to study and document the Lepcha language. He published "A Grammar of the Róng (Lepcha) Language" in 1876. Known as 'Lepcha Mad,' he immersed himself in Lepcha life, residing in remote areas. General Mainwaring died in Bengal in 1893, leaving behind valuable linguistic contributions.
