Es war der rapide Rückgang der Steinböcke, der 1963 zur Gründung des 'Parc National de la Vanoise', des ersten französischen Nationalparks, führte. Heute sind es wieder mehr als 1500, die durch das Hochgebirge streifen. Neben dem Tierreichtum zeichnet sich der Park vor allem durch eine große geologische Vielfalt aus. Dazu gesellt sich eine üppige Pflanzenwelt mit vielen seltenen Blumen. Unzählige glasklare Bergseen, in denen sich die weißbepuderte Gipfelwelt spiegelt, laden zum erfrischenden Bad ein.
