Hardback. Condición: New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: New. First hardcover edition. By the time "Ask Again, Yes" came out in 2019, Mary Beth Keane had gained enough of a reputation from her two previous novels that this one debuted at number five on the New York Times best sellers list. The story of two Irish-American families, living next door to each other in a town near New York City, where both husbands and fathers work as police officers, Maureen Corrigan called "Ask Again, Yes," a "modestly magnificent novel" in her review for NPR listeners. The story covers a full forty years, starting in 1973, when the city was at just about its lowest point. But this is more of a domestic tale than a drama of urban grit and grime, examining how life just happens, one accidental thing after another, whether that's neighborhood children falling in love with each other, or mental illness and alcoholism (and other things that generation tended to consider best not spoken of) damaging lives, or dramatic, sudden violence. The story is told in alternating voices and perspectives, changing with each chapter and covering almost every member of the two families, giving each character depth. The end result is what Corrigan said was, ".one of the most unpretentiously profound books I've read in a long time." This copy is a first edition, first printing. It is signed by the author on the title page. Both the book itself and the dust jacket are, as can be expected, in pristine, never-read condition. Photos are forthcoming or immediately available on request. Signed.…
