Shipped with care. --- Norman J. Fulkerson's biography follows the life of Colonel John W. Ripley… of the United States Marine Corps in chronological sequence, from childhood to death. The opening chapters trace his boyhood in Radford, Virginia, before moving to his years as a member of the Class of 1962 at the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis and his service as a Marine officer. The central episode is Ripley's action during the Easter Offensive of 1972, when Colonel Gerald Turley ordered him to hold his position against a force of some 30,000 North Vietnamese troops and 200 tanks; Ripley destroyed the Dong Ha bridge, preventing the enemy crossing, and was awarded the Navy Cross. Later sections address his outspoken public positions on women in combat, on all-male military schools, and on homosexuals in the armed forces, as well as his role as husband and father. The narrative closes with his death on 28 October 2008. The account draws on the author's personal acquaintance with Ripley and on interviews with Marines who served with him. Signed by Author.

John Walter Ripley (June 29, 1939 October 28, 2008) was a United States Marine Corps officer who received the Navy Cross for his actions in combat during… the Vietnam War. On Easter morning 1972, Captain Ripley repeatedly exposed himself to intense enemy fire over a three-hour period as he prepared to blow up an essential bridge in Dong Ha. His actions significantly hampered the North Vietnamese Army's advance into South Vietnam. The story of "Ripley at the Bridge" is legendary in the Marine Corps and is captured in a gripping diorama at the United States Naval Academy. The book "Bridge at Dong Ha" by John Grider Miller is required reading for Naval Academy plebes. On October 28, 2009, the first biography about Col. Ripley was published. It was written by Norman Fulkerson and is titled An American Knight, The Life of Col. John W. Ripley. (Wikipedia).
