The tragedy involved five trains, including a troop train carrying soldiers of the 1/7th Battalion, Royal Scots, who were en route to Gallipoli. The disaster unfolded due to signaling errors, leading to a double collision—first between the troop train and a stationary local passenger train, then a minute later, an express train crashed into the wreckage. The wooden carriages, lit by gas lamps, ignited, causing a devastating fire. The official death toll was 227, including 215 soldiers, nine passengers, and three railway employees.
