Drawing upon historical and philosophical perspectives, the author examines the fundamental principles of government and the ethical obligations of citizens. By analyzing cases where obedience to the law conflicts with personal conscience, the book sheds light on the delicate balance between individual rights and the authority of the state. The author argues that the conscience of the people is central to understanding the present state of affairs in the United States, where the Constitution and laws of the land have lost their moral force due to misinformed and misdirected moral sentiments. The book provides valuable insights into the nature of government, the limits of obedience, and the role of conscience in a democratic society. By examining these crucial issues, the book contributes to a deeper understanding of the challenges facing modern governments and the importance of maintaining a balance between individual liberty and collective well-being.
