The author meticulously examines the circumstances surrounding the Abbeyââ â¢s creation, challenging traditional narratives and exploring the motivations of its founder, Walter Espec. The book investigates the complex relationship between Rievaulx and the nearby Kirkham Priory, including an agreement for the Priory to cede lands to the Abbey, and the subsequent, controversial departure of Kirkham's Prior to found another Augustinian establishment. The author offers a fresh perspective on the motivations behind the founding of religious houses in medieval England, arguing that the story of Walter Espec's grief over the loss of his son, which is often cited as a key factor in the Abbey's creation, is likely a myth. Instead, the author suggests that the foundation of Rievaulx was driven by a more pragmatic desire to bring order and civilization to a wild and remote part of Yorkshire. The book provides a rich and detailed examination of the abbey's early history, revealing the interplay of political, religious, and social forces that shaped this iconic landmark.
