Born in Germany in the 18th century, Rapp was a weaver and vine-dresser who, upon reading the Bible, determined to create a communal society based on Christian principles. Leaving their homeland, 800 German immigrants founded Harmony, Pennsylvania. Harmonists believed in the power of hard work and the pursuit of perfection, leading to their success as skilled artisans and manufacturers. The society's efforts to create a self-sufficient economy and live harmoniously within their own utopia are remarkable, and their beliefs and practices continue to inspire modern-day communal living.
