Mathias examines both external and internal evidence to determine whether Rowley was a real poet or a fabrication. The external evidence includes historical records and contemporary accounts, while the internal evidence refers to the style and language used in the poems. Mathias argues that the poems are not genuine and that they were likely written by Thomas Chatterton, a young poet who claimed to have discovered them.
