Chris Calkins worked for the National Park Service for 34 years and served at Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park, ending his career as historian and Chief of Interpretation at Petersburg National Battlefield. In 2008 he accepted the position of first full-time Park Manager of Sailor?s Creek Battlefield Historical State Park. He retired from Petersburg National Battlefield July 2009. Chris authored twelve publications, numerous articles, and spoken nationally to many Civil War and preservation groups. He was the author of the highly acclaimed ?Lee?s Retreat? (featured in LIFE and SOUTHERN LIVING magazines) which is now being used as a successful example of Heritage Tourism nationwide, and was the ?grandfather? of Virginia Civil War Trails. Following the breakthrough at Petersburg on April 2?3, 1865, General Robert E. Lee evacuated his positions to retreat west, aiming to reach Danville and unite with General Joseph E. Johnston. Pursued by Union forces, the 100-mile, week-long march was marked by hunger, dwindling supplies, and intense skirmishes, culminating in Lee?s surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. After the defeat at Five Forks (April 1) and the collapse of the Petersburg lines, Confederate forces abandoned Petersburg and Richmond. Lee aimed for Amelia Court House to resupply, but crucial supplies failed to arrive, delaying the army and allowing Union forces to catch up. A disastrous battle was fought at Sailor's Creek, where nearly a quarter of Lee's army (roughly 7,000 men) was captured or killed. The Confederates narrowly escaped over the Appomattox River, burning bridges behind them. Surrounded and trapped at Appomattox Court House, Lee met with Union General Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865 to surrender the Army of Northern Virginia.
