Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very good. First edition. Inscribed in a blue pen on the blank before the title page: "For Art Barber, with admiration and best wishes, Sylvia Earle." Uncommon signed. The book tells of the history and adventure of ocean exploration, introducing key figures in diving and submersibles such as William Beebe, Jacques-Yves Cousteau, and Edwin Link. Four hundred illustrations, especially photos by Giddings. Laid in at front is an interesting collection of nine clippings related mainly to Earle but also about deep sea mining, and at rear is a more robust newsletter,Connections, from the Nat Geo Society, featuring the story "Sylvia's Dream Comes True." We're not sure of the recipient's association with Earle, but possibly he went on a Nat Geo cruise in which Earle was an explorer in residence, as there's a flyer laid in advertising that. Also of interest at rear in the book is a list of related reading. Sylvia Earle (b. 1935) is a standout marine biologist, oceanographer and explorer, often described as a Rachel Carson of the oceans. She has been a National Geographic explorer-in-residence since 1998, was the first female chief scientist of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and was named by Time Magazine as its first Hero for the Planet in 1998. Among many, many other accolades, she has won the Rachel Carson Award from the National Audubon Society and the Carl Sagan Award for Public Understanding of Science. Her best known book is Sea Change, described as "an enthusiastic celebration of that diversity and abundance [of the marine world] . . . a profoundly sobering account of the shortsighted human assault on ocean life." An important woman in science and biology. A large quarto, cloth with purple stamped illustrations of divers and fish on the front. Very good with a little lift to the lower corner of front board, some fading to edges. In a very good jacket with a small tear to front edge near spine and large chip and tear to lower rear panel. A nice addition to any ocean or exploration collection.
