Significant research into the life and output of the Welsh clockmaker, Samuel Roberts. Very readable and most interesting. The Montgomeryshire clock maker (c. 1720- 1800) produced about 600 clockes each of which was numbered and dated. Fortunately he left behind an account book listing his business activities covering the years 1755 - 74. This new study uses this and other documentary sources as well as surveys of over one hundred of his surviving clocks to examine in depth the life, creativity, social and cultural contexts of a working craftsman. Lavishly illustrated with over 119 plates. Ref RRR 6.
