Frederick Doveton Nichols, FAIA, was an architect, educator, and historian. He studied for two years at Colorado College and completed his undergraduate degree in fine arts from Yale University in 1935. He joined the National Park Service, becoming regional director of the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS). He became director of architectural studies at the University of Hawaii in 1941 and after service in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II, he returned to Hawaii. In 1950 he became a professor and later chairman of the School of Architecture at the University of Virginia until his retirement in 1982. Nichols wrote several books on the architectural history of Georgia and Virginia and on Thomas Jefferson as a designer. He was a Guggenheim fellow in 1963 and received the University of Virginia Thomas Jefferson Award in 1979 as well as other fellowships and awards. Nichols was a member of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation, the American Institute of Architects Task Force on the U.S. Capitol West Front, the Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission, and the Monticello Restoration Society. In the introduction to this work, Frederick Doveton Nichols observes, "Jefferson stands alone as the most distinguished native architect of the Early Republic." The drawings collected in the pages that follow this assertion bear out the truth of Nichol's words. From the graceful floor plans of Monticello to the public buildings of Williamsburg and the pavilions of the University of Virginia, the imaginative and mathematical mind of Thomas Jefferson takes shape in the architectural sketches for these landmark structures. A detailed checklist is appended to the text and provides a thorough overview of Jefferson's drawings. Architecture first captured Thomas Jefferson s imagination while he was a student in Williamsburg, when he bought his first architectural book from an old cabinetmaker. "Architecture is my delight, " he was quoted as saying in later years, "and putting up, and pulling down, one of my favorite amusements." This fascinating book by Frederick Doveton Nichols is a compilation of original architectural drawings done by Thomas Jefferson. The book includes drawings of the First Version of Monticello, the Final Drawings of Monticello, The University of Virginia Rotunda and Pavilions, the Virginia Capitol in Richmond, and Poplar Forest. A commentary at the beginning of the book contains an overview of Jefferson s architectural development and a check list at the end of the book is arranged in alphabetical order by places or buildings with the current location of the drawings. Jeffersonian architecture is an American form of Neo-Classicism and/or Neo-Palladianism embodied in the architectural designs of U.S. President and polymath Thomas Jefferson, after whom it is named. These include his home (Monticello), his retreat (Poplar Forest), the university he founded (University of Virginia), and his designs for the homes of friends and political allies (notably Barboursville). More than a dozen private homes bearing his personal stamp still stand today. Jefferson's style was popular in the early American period at about the same time that the more mainstream Greek Revival architecture was also coming into vogue (1790s1830s) with his assistance. In colonial Virginia during the 18th century there were no schools of architecture, so Jefferson learned the profession on his own from books and by studying some of the classical architectural designs of the day. As a self-taught architect and classicist, he was most influenced by the Italian revivalist architect Andrea Palladio (15081580). His "bible" was Andrea Palladio's The Four Books of Architecture, which taught him the basic principles of classical design. Jeffersonian architecture is therefore perhaps best described as "Palladian" in inspiration. Jefferson was also influenced by architect James Gibbs (16821754), and by French Neo-classical buildings, such as the Hôtel de Salm in Paris, when he served as Ambassador to France. While the Jeffersonian style incorporates Palladian proportions and themes, it is at the same time unique to Jefferson's own personal sensibility and the materials available to him in early republican Virginia. Throughout his adult life Jefferson made many architectural drawings and wrote extensively about architectural design. Today there are over 600 pages of architectural documents by Jefferson now housed at the Massachusetts Historical Society and are commonly referred to as the Coolidge Collection. Fourth Edition [stated] Fifth printing [stated].
