Hardcover. Condición: New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: New. With the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria in June 1014, political tensions in Europe quickly escalated into one of the deadliest wars in history. As the turmoil in Europe intensified, President Woodrow Wilson remained determined to focus on domesti…c matters while Americans fiercely debated administration policy, from domestic security to commercial interests--issues that would be affected by the war in Europe. Political leaders in the United States were swayed by popular opinion to remain neutral; yet less than three years later, the nation declared war on Germany, "Nothing Less Than War"; "A New History of America's Entry into World War I" examines the clash of opinions over the war during this transformative period and offers a fresh perspective on America's decision to enter World War I. Justus D. Doenecke analyses both primary and secondary sources to provide a comprehensive evaluation of America's political climate during this critical period. From the beginning of the war in Europe in August 1914 almost until the United States declared war against Germany in Aril 1917. Wilson held fast in his support of neutrality. Doenecke reviews the public and private diplomacy of Wilson and his closest advisers and explores the response of Congress to the war. Debates about America's role in the conflict in Europe also raged in the popular media and among citizen groups that sprang up across the country as the economy was threatened by European blockades and attacks on American ships by German U-boats. Doenecke scrutinizes American leadership and policies, reappraising the country's international role and surveying the tumultuous debate over American participation in the widening and increasingly devastating world war. Through its analysis of specialized studies, contemporary newspapers and other accounts, "Nothing Less Than War" evaluates the effects of American and European worldviews, the actions of policymakers and diplomats, the brutality of unrestricted submarine warfare, and the popular consensus on Wilson's decision to declare war on Germany. The decision to engage in battle ultimately belonged to Wilson, but, as Docnecke demonstrates, Wilson's choice was not made in isolation. "Nothing Less Than War" provides a comprehensive assessment of America's changing international role from 1914 to 1917. There are black and white photos. The book provides Notes to Pages and Index. 1 lb 1.7 oz.
