Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very good. Michael Thompson (Jacket photograph) Ilustrador. First Printing [Stated]. x, 310 pages. Illustrations. Index. Autographed by author sticker on front of DJ. Signed and dated by Cohen on the title page. An African-American Democrat married to the white Republican former Secretary of Defense reveals how she used her anger from growing up in poverty, segregation, and prejudice to make a positive impact on the world, becoming a renowned journalist and the "First Lady" of the Pentagon. Janet Leola Langhart Cohen (née Floyd; born December 22, 1941) is an American television journalist and anchor, and author. Beginning her career as a model, she started in television reporting the weather. She serves as president and CEO of Langhart Communication. She is the spouse of former Defense Secretary William Cohen. She has written two memoirs, one with her husband. In June 2009, her one-act play Anne and Emmett, inspired by the lives of Anne Frank and Emmett Till, premiered at the United States Holocaust Museum. In 1962, Langhart began her career in Chicago as a model, where she worked for Marshall Field's and the Ebony Fashion Fair. She won the title of Miss Chicagoland in 1967. Langhart became the first black "weathergirl" for WBBM-TV in 1970. She also began hosting an early morning interview program for women on WISH-TV in Indianapolis; it was called "Indy Today." Langhart met William Cohen during a long-distance interview. They did not meet in person until she worked for BET in Washington, D.C.; Andrew Young set up an interview for her with Cohen. They began dating after each divorced. The couple married in the U. S. Capitol on Valentine's Day 1996. Derived from a Publishers Weekly article: The opening line in Langhart Cohen's reflective autobiography reveals the core of her struggle as an ambitious girl from Indianapolis in the 1940s: "You're pretty for a colored girl," a young playmate told her. It was one of Langhart Cohen's first lessons in racism and certainly wasn't her last. Although her mother attempted to instill self-esteem in her daughter, Langhart Cohen faced numerous struggles, including poverty and estrangement from her father. She recounts anecdote after anecdote illustrating how she beat the odds. There was the time she visited a charm school with hopes of acquiring the polish needed to pursue a modeling career; the instructor told her that engaging in such a course would be futile because she'd never employ the skills she acquired. Triumph was sweet when Langhart Cohen was invited to model for Marshall Field & Company department store and got to participate in the Ebony Fashion Fair, a touring company of models. Langhart Cohen's grace and style helped later, too, when she was introduced to and formed friendships with Muhammad Ali and Martin Luther King, and greeted American troops in Bosnia alongside her husband, Clinton's secretary of defense, Bill Cohen. The author vividly recounts an exciting journalism career, recalling her interviews with Rosa Parks, David Duke and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Langhart Cohen's engaging account takes readers on a journey beginning with the hate that hate produced and ending with pride and love for her country.
