Notes: If one starts to trace the idea of evolution back from Darwin eventually one place you end up is with Hutton. I tried to read Hutton once or twice and he was impenetrable. Fortunately for everyone Charles Lyell was able to read Hutton and describe what he was nattering on about. In the late 1700's Hutton began to realize that the earth was immensely old, millions of years old. (Fortunately the Church was past its burning heretics phase.) Lyell translated this idea into "Principles of Geology" which Darwin read while on the Beagle. Guess what came of that. Darwin now understood that immense time allows for immense change. The author, Repcheck, writes a very readable summary of Hutton and his times. Recommended to those wishing to understand the history of thought on evolution. Signed by Author(s).
