Edited by Sylvia Backemeyer, the book focuses on the theories and practices developed by W.R. Lethaby and his successors, tracing the institution's history through the evolution of various disciplines and the significant contributions of key individuals. Notable figures like Robert Gibbings, Margaret Pilkington, and John Farleigh played vital roles not only at the Central School but also in establishing the Crafts Centre of Great Britain, the predecessor to the Crafts Council.The narrative highlights the major impact of the Central School on craftsmanship and design in the post-war era. Key artisans trained or taught there include ceramists Alison Britton, Richard Slee, and Gillian Lowndes, along with textile designers Peter Collingwood and Marianne Straub, and renowned jewellers Fred Rich, Wendy Ramshaw, and Jane Short. In the realm of design, the school has contributed immensely, with thirty-two Royal Designers for Industry among its alumni, including Douglas Scott, Robert Welch, and David Carter. The rich landscape of post-war British graphic design, marked by innovative typography and printmaking, can trace its roots to the Central, citing influential designers such as Derek Birdsall, Alan Fletcher, and Colin Forbes.The book also includes the section Insights from the Inside, offering personal reflections from former students, enriching the reader's understanding of the Central School's legacy.
