Hardcover. Condición: Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. First Printing. 23 cm, 192 pages. Index. Some wear, soiling, and sticker residue to DJ. Rear board slightly bowed, black mark on bottom edge. DJ states: His Guiding Principles of Leadership and Negotiation. James C. Humes was a professor of language and leadership at the University of Southern Colorado and was an author and former speechwriter for Presidents Eisenhower, Nixon, Ford, and Reagan. Humes, along with William Safire and Pat Buchanan, is credited for authoring the text on the Apollo 11 lunar plaque. Humes has written many books sharing his extensive knowledge of the modern history and political landscape. Family members said that in an era before the internet, Humes's encyclopedic knowledge of American history and his meticulously indexed collection of historical quotes and anecdotes, which he maintained in loose-leaf three ring binders, attracted the notice of the Nixon campaign in 1968. On the speech-writing staff of President Nixon, Humes specialized in ceremonial remarks and toasts. Family members said one of the highlights of his service in the White House was when the president asked him to participate in drafting the inscription on the plaque to be left on the moon by the astronauts on the Apollo XI mission in 1969: "Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the Moon July 1969, A.D. We came in peace for all mankind." As a member of the English Speaking Union, he met Winston Churchill, then in his second term as Prime Minister. Churchill's words to Humes that day, "Young man, study history. In history lie all the secrets of statecraft." Derived from a Kirkus review: The insights available here are not limited to those intended by the author. Humes was a Nixon speechwriter and friend. This volume is intriguing. The ``commandments'' are fairly standard maxims in international diplomacy-e.g., negotiate agreements in private, never give up a bargaining chip without receiving something in return, leave adversaries a way to save face-but they are also widely ignored by those conducting foreign policy. Humes's approach is to first depict Nixon putting a commandment into effect, then illustrating further by relating the success or failure of historical figures ranging from Pericles to Churchill to MacArthur. By weaving together incidents from Nixon's career and the wider past, Humes suggests a general theory of diplomacy and presents an entertaining collection of stories. Nixon admirers will find evidence of their hero's diplomatic virtuosity. Most interesting as an example of the movement to rehabilitate Nixon's reputation, but also worth reading as a treatise on diplomacy.

Most interesting as an example of the movement to rehabilitate Nixon's reputation, but also worth reading as a treatise on diplomacy. One of the most fascinating aspects of this work is the extensive discussion of President Nixon and interactions with the People's Republic of China. The index has Nixon references on pages 25, 37-38, 46, 57-64, 65, 73, 92-97, and 180-181. There are Kissinger references to China at ages 59-64, 73, 92-94, 95, and 96. There are also index references to Chou En-Lai and Mao Tse-tung.
