Hardcover. Condición: Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. First Edition. mylar glued to the boards, ex-library with usual library marking, library barcode on front cover, ffp excised. While certainly a biography, Richard Pollak's book is much more than a simple account of the life of the renowned psychologist Bruno Bettelheim. Pollak's book is both more personal and more damning than would be possible for any other writer to draft. Pollak's younger brother Stephen was a patient of Bettelheim's and a student at the Orthogenic School in Chicago. At age nine, while playing hide-and-seek with his brother in an old dairy barn, Richard witnessed his six-year-old brother accidentally fall to his death. Pollak's parents attempted to deal with this tragedy by sweeping it under the rug, a solution that only delayed the author's desire to know more about his brother, his parents, and the full dimensions of this tragedy within his family life. A visit to Bettelheim to inquire into his brother's psychological records, led to a remarkable encounter in which Bettelheim inexplicably insisted that Stephen had committed suicide and laid the blame for his death with Pollak's mother, whom he described as a jealous and uncaring woman. This incredible experience led Pollak to begin to question what type of man Bettelheim truly was, and what basis he had for his diagnosis. What Pollak has uncovered is simply incredible. A twisted path of deception, self-invention, and plagiarism is disclosed in damning detail, stripping the famed author of The Uses of Enchantment of any justifiable claim to his esteemed reputation as a child psychologist, and throwing into doubt many of the basic details of the life the late Bettelheim had claimed to have lived. Pollak takes down Bettelheim, pins him to the mat, and pursues him to the end, in a fascinating work that stretches the boundaries of biography.

In fact, as Richard Pollak documents in this revelatory new biography, Bettelheim was a lumber dealer who grandly reinvented himself with a faked set of academic credentials after emigrating to the United States in 1939. In the years that followed, deception followed deception as Bettelheim claimed that he had traveled in Freud's circle, had treated autistic children in Vienna, had interviewed 1,500 fellow prisoners for his famous psychological study of concentration camp behavior, and had been freed from Buchenwald through the intervention of Eleanor Roosevelt. In Love Is Not Enough, Truants From Life, and The Empty Fortress, Bettelheim's much~praised books about the Orthogenic School, the home for emotionally disturbed children at the University of Chicago that he ran for three decades, he continued his fabrications, maintaining that he had treated "hundreds" of schizophrenic children who feared for their lives at the hands of their parents, shaping pseudonymous case histories to enhance his reputation, and claiming, with concocted statistics, that he was returning 85 percent of his young patients to normal lives. Pollak also demonstrates in frightening detail how "Dr. B," as he was called at the Orthogenic School, often spun angrily out of control and abused the children both physically and emotionally, all the while insisting in his books and from the lectern that such punishment was absolutely verboten. Pollak also carefully spells out how Bettelheim plagiarized portions of his prize~winning book on the psychological meaning of fairy tales, The Uses of Enchantment. Pollak grew up in Hyde Park, the University of Chicago neighborhood where Bettelheim settled in the 1940s, and his brother Stephen attended the Orthogenic School. Pollak first grew suspicious that Bettelheim might be something less than a benign healer, something other than the therapeutic hero lionized by the media, after Bettelheim told him that Stephen had committed suicide. Pollak knew this was not true, and after Bettelheim himself committed suicide in 1990, Pollak began a search for the facts behind Bettelheims image. What he found was a boy who grew up in a home darkened for years by his father's struggle with syphilis, a son who felt ugly, loathed his poor eyesight, and resented having to drop out of the University of Vienna at age twenty~three to take over the lumber business after his father died. Bruno Bettelheim was plagued with depression all his life and felt constantly the outsider, a self~hating Jew who compensated by noisily blaming the Jews of Europe for walking into the ovens of the Holocaust without a fight. In a work of prodigious research, Pollak reveals the real Bruno Bettelheim for the first time, giving us a portrait at once tough~minded and sympathetic of a man who, for all his success, could never stop dissembling and re~creating himself.
