Ruth Spalding first came across him when she visited Stockholm as a student and found mention of him in histories of Queen Christina's reign. Those at the Swedish court in 1654 who presumed they could humiliate the representative of a regicidal parliament were in for a shock; indeed, it was to this stranger that the brilliant, capricious Queen first confided her plan to abdicate. A colleague of Pym, Hampden, and Cromwell, Whitelocke was a resolute champion of freedom of conscience and a participant in constitutional crises which have parallels in the 1970s. He also had three wives and seventeen children. Their fortunes and misfortunes weave in and out of an eventful public life, recorded in his unpublished Diary. Always close to the centre of things, his story, at times deeply moving, throws important light on the chief personalities and.
