A colleague of Pym, Hampden, and Cromwell, Whitelocke was a resolute champion of freedom of conscience and a participant in constitutional crises which have parallels in the 1970s. He also had three wives and seventeen children. Their fortunes and misfortunes weave in and out of an eventful public life, recorded in his unpublished Diary.
