Meier. As the third installment in his monumental multi-volume series, this 720-page volume shifts the scholarly spotlight away from Jesus in isolation to focus entirely on his relationships, social movement, and interactions with other first-century Jewish factions. Meier?s guiding principle in this volume is that 'no human being is adequately understood if he or she is considered in isolation from other human beings.' To understand the historical Jesus, one must examine how he defined himself against his contemporaries. Meier firmly plants Jesus within mainstream first-century Palestinian Judaism rather than on the fringes of Greco-Roman or Cynic philosophy, rejecting popular 1990s revisionist theories. He argues that Jesus did not lead an amorphous, egalitarian crowd, but intentionally structured a defined religious movement. Meier, who was a Catholic priest and professor at the University of Notre Dame, writes with an exacting, hyper-methodical academic style. He strictly applies historical-critical criteria?such as the criterion of embarrassment and multiple attestation?to evaluate the historical reliability of Gospel accounts. The book is famous for its massive, rigorous footnotes, which frequently dwarf the main text to address opposing scholarly debates. Ultimately, Volume Three cements Meier's portrait of Jesus not as a political revolutionary or a detached philosopher, but as an eschatological Jewish prophet who fiercely and consciously competed for the religious destiny of Israel.
