Interest in Conrad's work is at a new high, and the author of The Nigger of the Narcissus, Lard Jim, Heart of Darkness, The Secret Agent, and Under Western Eyes is now clearly seen not only as a superb romancer but also as one of the great twentieth-century explorers of moral dilemmas, who raises in his fiction the enduring questions of human existence. Frederick R. Karl's magisterial biography, the fruit of a lifetime's study of Conrad, establishes how and why this son of Polish nationalist revolutionaries turned English seaman became one of the leading novelists in our language. These three lives' 'as Pole, as sailor, and then as writerwere intertwined. Even as a youngster in Poland, Jozef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski was a writer in the making. During the years at sea, Mr. Karl also shows, Conrad was observing with the eyes of the future novelist. And so, when he turned seriously to writing, in a language learned late and with his life more than half over, he was armed, prepared. Drawing on thousands of letters and other documentation, Mr. Karl integrates Conrad with the Polish, French, and British historical backgrounds; with social and political contexts; and with cultural and literary influences, including Polish poetry and prose, French Symbolist writing, the English classics, and his Edwardian and Georgian colleagues and friends, among them Henry James, Stephen Crane, H. G. Wells, and Ford Madox Ford.
