Has prior owner's information written inside front cover, and an inscription on front end paper. Is also embossed (sealed like a notary seals a document) with the prior owner'??s initials on a few pages. Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. R. A. Skelton et. al. The Vinland Map and the Tartar Relation. New Haven CT: Yale University Press, 1995, 1st. printing of new edition, lxvi, 291 pp. *** From the Dust jacket - New Edition with an Introduction by George D. Painter and Essays by Wilcomb E. Washburn, Thomas A. Cahill and Bruce H. Kusko, and Laurence C. Witten II. This famous book, first published in 1965, created quite a sensation with the educated public, but for the wrong reasons. It is a resurrection of a previously unknown map and manuscript based on an older copy, now lost. The Tartar Relation is an account of a man named Carpini who was sent by Pope Innocent IV on a Christian mission to the Mongols in Asia 1245-47. The Vinland Map was drawn to illustrate the lands of Asia through which Carpini journeyed as was known in the Medieval Era. The sensation came when people were led to believe this map was the first evidence that some Europeans, at least, were aware of the existence of Iceland, Greenland, and North America (Vinland). This information most likely came from Viking voyages several centuries before this map was drawn. And probably this map was drawn from older maps now lost. So, in retrospect, not earth shaking, just very interesting, Perhaps Marco Polo knew something of Carpini's journey, and decided if he could do it, then Polo could too (speculation on my part). Marco followed the Silk Road to China (1271 - 1295). Must have been some "distractions" that slowed him down. The history of the finding of this manuscript and it's eventual authentication is almost as interesting as the manuscript itself. This book includes b&w photo illustrations of the map and manuscript, a full-page modern sketch map of the Carpini mission, and eleven (11) b&w photo illustrations of ancient maps from the 1400 and 1500's of Western Europe and the North Atlantic. All of the images are of excellent quality. Original illustrated dust jacket is in a clear protective cover. This book is in my inventory and the images are of this particular item. *** Dark blue cloth boards with no wear, soil, or damage. Jacket has very light wear, some light soil on some edges, one short tear at top of back panel that has been repaired on verso with archival tape. Fine in Near Fine jacket. *** 11.75 inches tall by 9.5 inches. 11/4/25 Ripleys $8.00 # 5745.

Añadir al carritoFirst Printing; Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. Second Revised Edition. Ex-Libris; B & W ; 9 1/2 x 11 1/2"; xxxvii. 291 pages; Hard cover has gold lettering on the spine, slight bumping. DJ has slight rubbing, sunning; in a mylar cover. Black end papers. Blind stamped on bottom corner of front end paper and first blank page. Pages are clean and tight; appears as if unused. 19 plates, 3 of them gatefolds. 'The Vinland Map, dated to about A. D. 1440 - at least fifty years before Columbus landed in the Americas - is a unique map of the world that shows an outline of the northeast American coast and a legend describing its discovery in about 1000 by Leif Eiriksson, the Norseman from Greenland. The map was published by Yale University Press in 1965 and generated an enormous amount of debate. Chemical analysis of the ink later suggested that the map might be a forgery, but recent appraisals of both scientific and humanist evidence argue that it is indeed authentic. Now, on the thirtieth anniversary of its original publication, here is this classic of historical cartography in a new edition. It reprints unaltered the original text on the Vinland Map and an account of Friar John of Plano Carpini's mission to the Mongols from 1245 to 1247 (the Tartar Relation) , with which the map had at some stage been bound. To this have been added a new introduction by George D. Painter, sole survivor of the original team of editors, who discusses the verification of the map's authenticity; a new essay by Wilcomb E. Washburn, director of the Smithsonian's American Studies Program, on the map's provenance and scientific testing; and a new discussion of the map's compositional and structural aspects by Thomas A. Cahill and Bruce H. Kusko, of the Crocker Historical and Archaeological Projects at the University of California, Davis. There is also an account by the rare-book dealer Laurence C. Witten II, who died while this new edition was in preparation, of his acquisition of the map in 1957.' The text of the Tartar relation is in Latin; the facsimile is accompanied by a transcription of the Latin text with English translation on facing pages. Index. Oversized/4#.
