This book considers the syntax of the early Middle English period in an innovative and detailed manner, adding to the established understandings of Middle English grammar from the landmark works of the late 19th century. The author attempts to fill in a research gap for this period of English philology through a close analysis of auxiliary verbs and other grammatical structures from a representative prose text of early Middle English, the Ancren Riwle. The book explores the use and grammatical function of the auxiliary verbs beon, habben, cunnan, magan, willah, soulan, and don, as well as the use of periphrastic future constructions and the use of auxiliary verbs in conditional sentences. While focused on the specific grammatical features of one text, the book positions this analysis within broader trends in English language, providing a platform to understand how Middle English evolved from Old English, and how the language's grammar would evolve from Middle to Early Modern English. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
