Translated from the 1976 Italian work Il mondo di carta: Ricerche sulla seconda rivoluzione scientifica…, with a foreword by noted Galileo scholar Stillman Drake. The volume contains xiii, 220 pages, followed by notes, bibliography, a chronology of the second scientific revolution, and an index. Bellone examines the changing relationship between mathematics, experiment, theory, and physical reality during what he calls the "second scientific revolution." He introduces the concept of the scientist's "dictionary"—the intellectual assumptions and philosophical framework brought to scientific problems—and applies it to episodes involving Ampère, Herschel, Kelvin, Boltzmann, and other major figures. Particular attention is given to the growing authority of mathematical abstraction and the debate between experimental and theoretical approaches to physics. Condition: Very Good/ Good Publisher's cloth hardcover in the original illustrated dust jacket. The binding appears firm, with the title and copyright pages clean in the areas photographed. The dust jacket shows general age toning, rubbing, soiling, and edge wear. There is a conspicuous horizontal tear with paper loss near the upper-right portion of the front panel, affecting part of the subtitle text, along with smaller edge tears and creasing. The rear panel has scattered staining and surface marks, and the jacket spine ends show wear and chipping. The jacket remains substantially complete and presents reasonably well despite the noted defects. No writing or underlining is visible in the pages photographed. This first English edition is of interest to readers and collectors of the history and philosophy of science, particularly those studying nineteenth-century physics, scientific methodology, mathematical abstraction, and the development of modern theoretical science.
