Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. Reprint. First published in Australia in 1872 in serial form and as a novel in 1874, in this edition in 1929 and 1979 and in the UK in 1980, this is a sixth impression of the UK edition of 1991. Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, some slight fading and yellowing to spine, slight yellowing to page block, not price clipped (no published price), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 657pp. This classic book is the best known novelisation of life as a convict in early Australian history. At times relying on seemingly implausible coincidences, the story follows the fortunes of Rufus Dawes, a young man transported for a murder that he did not commit. The book clearly conveys the harsh and inhumane treatment meted out to the convicts, some of whom were transported for relatively minor crimes, and graphically describes the conditions the convicts experienced. The novel was based on research by the author as well as a visit to the penal settlement of Port Arthur, Tasmania. Marcus Andrew Hislop Clarke FRSA (1846-1881), was an English born Australian novelist, journalist, poet, editor, librarian and playwright. In spite of the popular success of his novel, Clarke was constantly involved in financial difficulties, which are said to have hastened his death at Melbourne on 2nd August 1881 at the sadly early age of 35.
