orange glossy hardbound 8vo. dustwrapper in protective plastic. very fine cond. mint cond. looks brand new. as new. binding square & tight. covers clean. edges clean. contents free of all markings. dustwrapper in fine cond. not worn or torn or price clipped. nice clean copy. no library markings, store stamps, stickers, bookplate…s, no names, inking , underlining, remainder markings etc ~first edition so stated. first printing (nap). xiii+307p. references. index. natural history. natural science. ecology. environmentalism. biology. botany. zoology. ~ Since the appearance of Darwin's Origin of Species in 1859, we have all come to accept that we live in a changing world. Minute differences develop and pass on from generation to generation. Some give rise to new species, some do not, according to their fitness to survive. Some species die, and others take their place. Among all the brilliant varieties of Creation, we do not now say that any species comes on to our planet with a divine right to survive. But we are different. Though without a divine right to survive, we have a gift and a strong desire for improving ourselves. Each of us can take steps to improve our mental and physical health, and we are given foresight and reason to plan those steps well. Every day, we consume foods, take more medicines and use more industrial goods, many of which owe their production to the raw material of wild animals and plants. Thus our love of life takes its toll on others with us in the Ark. Dr Myers argues that we may be losing one species per day already ~ and that long before the year 2000 the rate could rise to one per hour. Must we contemplate such loss as a normal incident in the tides of evolution? Can we stop this destruction of diversity? We certainly have a responsibility to try. This book outlines broad~scale conservation measures which can be taken by the global community in defence of its common heritage.

Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very good. First edition. Inscribed to no recipient in blue ink on the front free endpaper: "Best wishes, Norman Myers." Uncommon signed. Myers (1934-2019) was a prominent British environmentalist who was known especially for highlighting the importance of "biodiversity hot…spots," and he also trained his eye on the prospect of environmental refugees. He was named the 2007Timemagazine Hero of the Environment and won at least a half dozen prominent environmental prizes. This book, his first, was an early look at the problem of species loss ("Dr. Myers argues that we may be losing one species per day already") and what can be done about it. Blurbs by Rene Dubos. Paul Ehrlich, and Garrett Hardin among others. A fine book in a very good jacket with some wrinkling to lower portion of rear panel.
