Hardcover. Condición: Very good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very good. ix, [5], 977, [1] pages. Illugrations. Maps. Genealogy. Notes. Sources & Select Bibliography. Index. Carlo Winthrop D'Este (August 29, 1936 November 22, 2020] was an American military historian and biographer, author of several books, especially on World War… II. He was a decorated U.S. Army lieutenant colonel who had a tour in Vietnam during the war. In 2011, he was awarded the Pritzker Literature Award for Lifetime Achievement in Military Writing. George Smith Patton Jr. (11 November 1885 21 December 1945) was a general in the United States Army who commanded the Seventh Army in the Mediterranean Theater of World War II, then the Third Army in France and Germany after the Allied invasion of Normandy in June 1944. His philosophy of leading from the front, and his ability to inspire troops with attention-getting, vulgarity-laden speeches, such as his famous address to the Third Army, were received favorably by his troops. Derived from a Publishers Weekly article: Perhaps the most renowned and controversial American general of the 20th century, George Patton (1885-1945) remains a subject of intense interest. D'Este provides new information from family archives and other sources about Patton's ancestry, childhood and pre-WWII military career. This includes his student years at West Point, his experience as a tank officer in WWI and various interwar staff assignments. The author emphasizes Patton's lifelong study and preparation for war and his conviction that God not only chose him specifically to lead an army but also stood ready to intervene to assure him battlefield victories. D'Este has much to say about Patton's impulsiveness, impatience and tactlessness, showing how these qualities often got him in trouble with the public as well as with his superiors. The account of Patton's campaigns from North Africa through Sicily, Normandy and the Ardennes enables the reader to understand why the general is regarded as one of the great military leaders. This is a major biography of a major American military figure. First Edition [stated]. Ninth printing [stated].

Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. 1st Edition. As the attached photos will attest, this is a magnificent first-edition first-printing of Carlo D'Este's monumental study of this extraordinary American general. This is a stated first edition with complete number line and an unpriced dust jacket and defi…nitely NOT a wimpy book club edition. As such, it'd make a great addition to any military collection, or a great gift for any student of Old Blood and Guts.
