Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - MULE MADDOX by Ronald L. Bern On a stormy November night in 1932, young Rafe Maddox is exploring the flooding Saluda River in rural South Carolina when he hears a woman's scream. Beaching his boat, he finds three men attempting to rape a beautiful local girl behind a country church. In her desperate struggle, Barbara Ann Marshbanks bites one of the hands that restrains her and is smashed in the face with a rock. Maddox fights and kills two of the men and stabs the third, whose name is Mason Miller. Maddox is desperately wounded but manages to get back to his boat. The wildly flooding river carries him more than 60 miles, first down the main branch of the Saluda and then down the smaller Generostee. His boat finally comes to rest in the shadow of a rough woods shack where he is found by Buck Daniels, landowner and ex-combat soldier. When the boy begs him not to call a doctor, Daniels makes a rough job of sewing his grotesquely slashed face with cotton thread by lantern light. Close to death, Barbara Anne and 'Mase' Miller are found and rushed to the hospital. Bud Clarke, longtime sheriff of Highland County, inadvertently provides Miller with an alibi: that he and the other two men stumbled upon Rafe Maddox attempting to force himself on the girl and came to her defense. Sheriff Clarke's instincts incline him differently, but he can see no way to determine the facts unless Barbara Anne recovers or Rafe Maddox -- assumed dead -- can be found alive. Barbara Anne survives surgery but is left horribly disfigured and in a coma. The sheriff sends deputy Billy Drake down river on the outside chance he will see some sign of Maddox. The young deputy stumbles on a liquor still where a retarded bootlegger accidentally kills him. Sheriff Clarke, bitterly blaming himself for Billy Drake's death, travels down river to help track his killers. The search for Maddox broadens. Meanwhile, rumors begin to circulate among fearful sharecropper families on the Daniels place about a dead man living in the woods shack. Absent any other evidence, Bud Clarke seeks a court order to exhume the bodies of Cliff Stamples and Charles Miller. Meanwhile, beneath a new gravestone and six feet of South Carolina clay, a fateful clue awaits in the desiccating hand of Charles Miller: the bite mark still visible above a cracked bone. Dark legends grow down on the Generostee as Clarke edges closer to finding Rafe Maddox and establishing a provable case. Powerful currents of justice and religion, guilt and superstition, fear and moral resolution all swirl together in a surprising and satisfying conclusion.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - A TEXAS PAST REVISITED IN SEARCH OF TEXANA BELLE contains twenty five chapters separated into four sub divisions: (1) The Dawning of Texas (2) The Branding of Texicans, (3) Where Are You Texana , and ( 4) Battle or Massacre This division was necessary in order to guide the reader to an understanding of one Tall Texas Tale and its truthfulness. If you are a history buff, as I am, you will enjoy section one. Here I review the emerging of the only State of these United States once existing as an independent nation. An attempt is made to make Texas history entertaining, long enough to cover essentials, but brief enough to retain interest. Texas history is a bloody struggle from inception. Mexican armies, Indians, new settlers, and outlaws were competing to stay alive in a hostile, environmentally unfriendly, wilderness expanse. Many families traveling to Texas, in the hope of new beginnings, reaped only disaster. Here I write of one such family who experienced this altered expectancy. I proudly lived with, and related this family story on many occasions before realizing it could be an untruth, a myth, or just another Tall Texas Tale. Have I been a liar all these years This epistle invites you along on my search for historical truth. The second division of my book could best be labeled, Formation of the Texas Personality. Have you from other states ever queried why Texicans are always talking, even bragging, about Texas Moreover, do you Texans truly understand your own braggadocio tendencies These important issues are answered in this section, along with a little bragging, storytelling, and Texas humor all my own. In segment three we get down to the serious business of researching my family saga. You will learn, and I do apologize, how not to do a genealogical study. I take you with me on a trip through several parts of colorful Texas. You will tag along as I struggle with two- and three-hundred-year-old records, books, and genealogical notes. You will also meet some very helpful librarians, genealogists, and other individuals. Elation and depression continually fight for control of my psyche as both disappointment and fantastic findings are dug from secluded hiding places. In section four, Battle or Massacre, I researched the career of Texas Ranger Captain John R. Waller. He played an important role in my family narrative and I needed to follow his career to ferret out information on Texana Belle. It was in this pursuit I discovered and questioned an important piece of Texas and Indian history. Looking at the writings of contemporary historians for understanding, I found misinformation, major discrepancies in reporting, and an interpretation of past history with present day ideologies. The event is too important to Texas history to ignore such variations. Thus, I open this phase of my book with a chapter titled History, True or False. My intentions are not to sway the reader's opinion but rather to present sufficient facts for a discerning individual to establish his own idea of truth. The citizens participating in the so-called 'Massacre of Indians' on December 27, 1858, are finally given the opportunity to present their sworn statements. The author accomplishes this with a fictitious dramatization of a meeting between the accused and the angry, frightened citizens of a frontier community. I believe you will enjoy this unusual presentation of history. I conclude my tome with a summary of findings, a looking back at personal history, and conceding how I finally reached understanding of my resistant to accept societal change. B. Bryce Davis.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - 'This autobiography is a fascinating reflection on a life of experiences rich enough for three men. A testimony to family, friendship and faith, it is, like St. Augustine's Confessions, a spirited and frank account of the quest for God. Dr. Zeiter is driven throughout his life to find truth, goodness, and beauty, and it is particularly through the beauty and order of music that his imagination is captured and he is brought to see even more fully truth and goodness in their own intrinsic splendor. High culture is not some incidental acquisition for Dr. Zeiter, but part of the nurturing of his daily life for nearly three-quarters of a century, whether in Lebanon, Venezuela, Canada, or the U.S. Dr. Zeiter reveals in his autobiography his wit (evident in his healthy sense of humor), his insight, and his optimism, as well as his intellectual and spiritual depth. This book is a pleasant reminder to us all of the high destiny to which we are called' (Thomas Dillon, Ph.D., President of Thomas Aquinas College).…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Fire Burn is based on diaries kept during World War II by a single, young professional woman, Irene Zarina White. From September 1939 through May 1946 Irene lived under four different governments: the Republic of Latvia, the Soviet Union, Nazi Germany, and the United States Occupation. She carefully recorded the details of each government¿s regime, World War II in full swing, and her everyday challenges. She met a remarkable variety of people who became astonishingly candid in her presence. And she documented it all. [For a sample click below to read about her encounter on a crowded train with an undercover Gestapo officer.] Irene survived the Soviet occupation of her home country, Latvia, an ancient multicultural crossroads of East and West at the Baltic Sea. In Fire Burn, she describes that last year of peace while she studied chemical engineering at the University of Latvia. Then in 1940 two days after graduating (the only female among 150 students) the Soviets invaded. Terrible months of terror, torture, arrests, and deprivation followed for the citizens of Latvia. Leaving extended family behind, Irene and her mother were able to escape to Germany where another horror awaited them - the Nazi Regime. Irene endured the long war years, working as a research chemist in a large chemical plant near Frankfurt am Main. She and her mother suffered hunger, cold, and the daily fear of death from continuous Allied bombing. 'We survived by the grace of God,' she says. Liberation from this harsh existence came in the form of American Occupation Forces in the spring of 1945, three days before Easter. Finally the bombing raids ended, but hunger persisited. No food was provided or could be bought. Irene found a job working for the U.S. Army - first as a secretary, then a dining hall hostess. She underwent and recorded entirely new and unexpected experiences in these roles. She met and a year later married a young American scientist, Dr. Merit Penniman White, who had previously worked with Albert Einstein on the Atomic Bomb. So in 1946, a new life as wife, mother, college teacher and researcher - as well as a new country - awaited her. Now sixty years after the end of World War II, and after turning ninety herself, Irene Zarina White is ready to impart her war time experiences. She wants to share her story with those few who also remember the war, as well as with new generations who could learn so much from her very personal piece of history.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Sun Rays at Midnight started originally as Memories of Childhood designed for the consumption of my children and their offspring, and intended to acquaint them with relatives whom they would never know. But my children insisted that I continue to write about my experiences during the Holocaust-experiences that were freely discussed and referred to in my home, especially when my father, my friends, or co-survivors were present. When I completed my manuscript, or thought that I did so, with the description of my liberation on May 1, 1945, I was encouraged by whoever had read it to have it published. The prospective publishers all insisted on having it edited first. For that purpose, I was introduced to Allan Anderson, editor for the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, who graciously agreed to do so as soon as time permitted. He was most helpful and understanding, showing unusual comprehension of the conditions and dynamics during the Holocaust as well as empathy for my state of mind. He, however, insisted that for the benefit of the prospective readers, I must continue the narrative with my postwar experiences. So under his guidance, I added two more chapters and the epilogue. In writing this book, I did not aspire to explain the social or political factors that went into the chain of events and cascaded into the enormous catastrophe, later labeled the Holocaust.I hoped not to detail the gory description of the mayhem that I had witnessed. Most of it had been documented in photographs and movie clips. What I hoped to portray, at the start at least, was the normality of life of an average Jewish youngster growing up in prewar Poland, a normality carved out of what you might consider abnormal conditions. Those conditions affected me as a member of a sometimes unfairly treated minority. As it happens, with all minorities exposed to bias for centuries, the Jews of Poland have developed a persecution complex tending to interpret most of the measures by the government, justly or not, as aimed to harm them.My family's economic life was affected by those measures when my father, a kosher butcher, could not generate enough business because when the attempt to outlaw ritual slaughter failed in the Polish Congress, the compromise drastically reduced the allotment of cattle to be slaughtered. My hopes for academic progress were stymied when I was refused admission to a polytechnic in the town that we lived despite being in the exclusive 2 percent of applicants who, based on the excellence of their written exams, had their oral exams waived. My physical safety was threatened when the anti-Semitic pogrom in my town relegated my family and me to cowing into the cellar for three days while the screaming mob roamed the streets, plundering Jewish homes and assaulting the Jewish inhabitants. The instances of similar attacks in other cities in Poland did nothing to alleviate the sense of insecurity and of not being welcomed. The fact that upon moving into an up-till-then, Christians-only neighborhood, I spent two weeks in bed from the beating administered to me by my Polish peers did not improve my sense of not being wanted.Nevertheless, all these did not obscure the impact that my interacting and, in many instances, friendship with my non-Jewish friends had on my growing up.I wrote about it in great detail because of some of those relationships-especially the one with Janek Malecki who was the leader of our neighborhood gang, the object of my youthf.…
