A manuscript poem, signed, by Richard Le Gallienne. Undated, two four-line stanzas on a 7 x 6 inch sheet, a horizontal fold in the middle. "Poet, whose words are like the tight-packed seed / Sealed in the capsule of a silver flower, / Still at your art we wonder as we read, / The art dynamic charging each word with power. // Seeds of the silver flower of Emerson: / One, on the winds to Scotland brought, did sink / In Carlyle's heart; and one was lately blown / To Belgium, and flowered in -- Maeterlinck." Le Gallienne (1866-1947) was a prolific English writer and poet. He moved from England to the United States at the turn of the century and spent most of the rest of his life here. This poem first appeared in "Success Magazine", the November, 1907 issue. Then, in his book "The Lonely Dancer and Other Poems, published by John Lane in 1913. The reference to Maurice Maeterlinck, a playwright and contemporary of Le Gallienne, "sought to stage Emersonâs concept of the 'over-soul' in his development of static theatre" (Katherine Biers in "Modern Drama", v.56, no.4).
