LEE is a monumental contribution to the literature of the Civil War. Lee's official correspondence~letters, orders, dispatches and battle reports~is complemented by his letters to his family to present a previously unavailable picture of Lees total life during the war. In Lees official correspondence there is the guarded control of careful composition; in the letters he wrote to his family there is a casual candor about the larger events and the course of their fortunes. The letters, written in Lees flowing but precise style, are self~explanatory. From them emerges the full and human character of this legendary man whose devotion to his cause was complete, yet totally realistic. THE WARTIME PAPERS OF R. E. LEE testifies to Lees comprehensive grasp of action across all fronts~and discredits forever the myth that Lees interests were restricted to the Army of Northern Virginia. Clifford Dowdey, distinguished historian and author of many well~known works on the Confederacy, has acted as general editor of the volume and has provided a short narrative connecting each section, placing the letters in the context of the events of the war. Louis H. Manarin has assembled and prepared the texts of the papers themselves. More than six thousand items of Lee's correspondence for the four years of the war have been discovered. Outside of the strictly military correspondence in the Official Records, few of Lee's letters have been published in full, and most of his personal letters have never before been published. Here for the first time are collected the most significant items of this correspondence. With the publication of this volume it is possible to know Lee fully. At the end, in April, 1865, Lee's message to Grant is written with a dignity and a stark simplicity which become all the more moving for the intimate knowledge we have gained of him through his correspondence. Here is Lee~the total man, self~revealed. THE WARTIME PAPERS OF R. E. LEE has been sponsored by the Virginia Civil War Commission as part of its cornmemoration of the Civil War Centennial.…

Añadir al carritoCloth Bound Boards. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. First Edition. From the Library of Sir John Mills and Mary Mills. Enclosed is a letter from the author (hand-signed) to John Mills presenting him with the copy of the book as a gift "Dear Sir Mills, I have noticed over the years that when I have art work presented here in the States and abroad, the art work presented abroad generally has a much better chance of identifying with a former or a present (a newer) tradition. (Former tradition generally appears to belong to Western Europe and a present tradition generally appears to belong to Eastern Europe and to countries of the former Soviet Union.) I wanted you to have a copy of a new book of mine in the area of drama. I have seen some of your work. Basic things said in introductory statements of the enclosed commonly have to do with the United State's heritage - particularly that of England. In a statement on the making of Gone With The Wind (pages 13, 14, and 15), I indicated that the British feel for their aristocracy and its acting tradition prevailed - giving the film much of its historic import. Sincerely John Gracen Brown. P.S. Another such book is to follow if I can obtain help on the Native-American Shawnee language. A major work (Vast Horizon) centers around the last of the French and Indian wars, a time when England ruled her colonies here." Size 10¼" x 7", 374 pages. Añadir al carritoSingle-sided letterpress broadside. 8" x 6." Printed in multiple typefaces. Issued during the rebuilding of Virginia City, Nevada, following the devastating fire of October 26, 1875, the broadside advises property owners that state and county taxes for the year 1876 are "NOW DUE" and payable to C. B. Smith, Storey County Treasurer and ex-Officio Tax Receiver, at his office on B Street, opposite Mooney's Stables. J. H. Douglass is identified as Deputy. Of particular note, printers Brown & Mahanny had themselves suffered losses in the fire, saving only a small portion of their printing material before quickly reestablishing their Virginia City printing office. At its height, Virginia City was one of the richest and most important communities in the American West, its extraordinary prosperity fueled by the immense wealth of the Comstock Lode. On October 26, 1875, a devastating fire swept through Virginia City, destroying much of its business district, including the Storey County Courthouse and numerous commercial and public buildings. But while buildings had been destroyed, the source of Virginia City's wealth had not. The fire struck during the height of the Comstock bonanza, and the mines continued to produce enormous quantities of silver and gold. Both the money and the incentive to rebuild were readily available. Reconstruction began almost immediately, and within a year much of the city had been rebuilt. The present broadside documents another important part of that recovery. Within a short period after the fire, Storey County was again conducting the ordinary business of government, including the collection of state and county taxes. Broadside is evenly tanned with minimal chipping to top edge, and with two small chips to extremities, else a very good copy, suitable for framing.
