Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - In this age of globalization, the eighteenth-century priest and abolitionist Henri Grégoire has often been called a man ahead of his time. An icon of antiracism, a hero to people from Ho Chi Minh to French Jews, Grégoire has been particularly celebrated since 1989, when the French government placed him in the Pantheon as a model of ideals of universalism and human rights. In this beautifully written biography, based on newly discovered and previously overlooked material, we gain access for the first time to the full complexity of Grégoire's intellectual and political universe as well as the compelling nature of his persona. His life offers an extraordinary vantage from which to view large issues in European and world history in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries and provides provocative insights into many of the prevailing tensions, ideals, and paradoxes of the twenty-first century. Focusing on Grégoire's idea of 'regeneration,' that people could literally be made anew, Sepinwall argues that revolutionary universalism was more complicated than it appeared. Tracing the Revolution's long-term legacy, she suggests that while it spread concepts of equality and liberation throughout the world, its ideals also helped to justify colonialism and conquest.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Energy Islands provides an urgent and nuanced portrait of collective action that resists racial capitalism, colonialism, and climate disruption. Weaving together historical and ethnographic research, this story challenges the master narratives of Puerto Rico as a tourist destination and site of 'natural' disasters to demonstrate how fossil fuel economies are inextricably entwined with colonial practices and how local community groups in Puerto Rico have struggled against energy coloniality to mobilize and transform power from the ground up.Catalina M. de Onís documents how these groups work to decenter continental contexts and deconstruct damaging hierarchies that devalue and exploit rural coastal communities. She highlights and collaborates with individuals who refuse the cruel logics of empire by imagining and implementing energy justice and other interconnected radical power transformations. Diving deeply into energy, islands, and power, this book engages various metaphors for alternative world-making.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Police Visibility presents empirically grounded research into how police officers experience and manage the information politics of surveillance and visibility generated by the introduction of body cameras into their daily routines and the increasingly common experience of being recorded by civilian bystanders. Newell elucidates how these activities intersect with privacy, free speech, and access to information law and argues that rather than being emancipatory systems of police oversight, body-worn cameras are an evolution in police image work and state surveillance expansion. Throughout the book, he catalogs how surveillance generates information, the control of which creates and facilitates power and potentially fuels state domination. The antidote, he argues, is robust information law and policy that puts the power to monitor and regulate the police squarely in the hands of citizens.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Challenging widespread assumptions that persons who are preferentially attracted to minors--often referred to as 'pedophiles'--are necessarily also predators and sex offenders, this book takes readers into the lives of non-offending minor-attracted persons (MAPs). There is little research into non-offending MAPs, a group whose experiences offer valuable insights into the prevention of child abuse. Navigating guilt, shame, and fear, this universally maligned group demonstrates remarkable resilience and commitment to living without offending and to supporting and educating others. Using data from interview-based research, A Long, Dark Shadow offers a crucial account of the lived experiences of this hidden population.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - A history of U.S. public health emergencies and how we can turn the tide. Despite enormous advances in medical science and public health education over the last century, access to health care remains a dominant issue in American life. U.S. health care is often hailed as the best in the world, yet the public health emergencies of today often echo the public health emergencies of yesterday: consider the Great Influenza Pandemic of 1918-19 and COVID-19, the displacement of the Dust Bowl and the havoc of Hurricane Maria, the Reagan administration's antipathy toward the AIDS epidemic and the lack of accountability during the water crisis in Flint, Michigan. Spanning the period from the presidency of Woodrow Wilson to that of Donald Trump, American Health Crisis illuminates how--despite the elevation of health care as a human right throughout the world--vulnerable communities in the United States continue to be victimized by structural inequalities across disparate geographies, income levels, and ethnic groups. Martin Halliwell views contemporary public health crises through the lens of historical and cultural revisionings, suturing individual events together into a narrative of calamity that has brought us to our current crisis in health politics. American Health Crisis considers the future of public health in the United States and, presenting a reinvigorated concept of health citizenship, argues that now is the moment to act for lasting change.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - How queerness and radical politics intersected--earlier than you thought. Well before Stonewall, a broad cross section of sexual dissidents took advantage of their space on the margins of American society to throw themselves into leftist campaigns. Sensitive already to sexual marginalization, they also saw how class inequality was exacerbated by the Great Depression, witnessing the terrible bread lines and bread riots of the era. They participated in radical labor organizing, sympathized like many with the early prewar Soviet Union, contributed to the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War, opposed US police and state harassment, fought racial discrimination, and aligned themselves with the dispossessed. Whether they were themselves straight, gay, or otherwise queer, they brought sexual dissidence and radicalism into conversation at the height of the Left's influence on American culture. Combining rich archival research with inventive analysis of art and literature, Love's Next Meeting explores the relationship between homosexuality and the Left in American culture between 1920 and 1960. Aaron S. Lecklider uncovers a lively cast of individuals and dynamic expressive works, revealing remarkably progressive engagement with homosexuality among radicals, workers, and the poor. Leftists connected sexual dissidence with radical gender politics, antiracism, and challenges to censorship and obscenity laws through the 1920s and 1930s. In the process, a wide array of activists, organizers, artists, and writers laid the foundation for a radical movement through which homosexual lives and experiences were given shape and new political identities were forged. Love's Next Meeting cuts to the heart of some of the biggest questions in American history: questions about socialism, about sexuality, about the supposed clash still making headlines today between leftist politics and identity politics. What emerges is a dramatic, sexually vibrant story of the shared struggles for liberation across the twentieth century.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Angelic beings can be found throughout the Hebrew Bible, and by late antiquity the archangels Michael and Gabriel were as familiar as the patriarchs and matriarchs, guardian angels were as present as one's shadow, and praise of the seraphim was as sacred as the Shema prayer. Mika Ahuvia recovers once-commonplace beliefs about the divine realm and demonstrates that angels were foundational to ancient Judaism. Ancient Jewish practice centered on humans' relationships with invisible beings who acted as intermediaries, role models, and guardians. Drawing on non-canonical sources--incantation bowls, amulets, mystical texts, and liturgical poetry--Ahuvia shows that when ancient men and women sought access to divine aid, they turned not only to their rabbis or to God alone but often also to the angels. On My Right Michael, On My Left Gabriel spotlights these overlooked stories, interactions, and rituals, offering a new entry point to the history of Judaism and the wider ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern world in which it flourished.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - A mold-breaking memoir of Asian American identity, political activism, community, and purpose. Not Yo' Butterfly is the intimate and unflinching life story of Nobuko Miyamoto--artist, activist, and mother. Beginning with the harrowing early years of her life as a Japanese American child navigating a fearful west coast during World War II, Miyamoto leads readers into the landscapes that defined the experiences of twentieth-century America and also foregrounds the struggles of people of color who reclaimed their histories, identities, and power through activism and art. Miyamoto vividly describes her early life in the racialized atmosphere of Hollywood musicals and then her turn toward activism as an Asian American troubadour with the release of A Grain of Sand--considered to be the first Asian American folk album. Her narrative intersects with the stories of Yuri Kochiyama and Grace Lee Boggs, influential in both Asian and Black liberation movements. She tells how her experience of motherhood with an Afro-Asian son, as well as a marriage that intertwined Black and Japanese families and communities, placed her at the nexus of the 1992 Rodney King riots--and how she used art to create interracial solidarity and conciliation. Through it all, Miyamoto has embraced her identity as an Asian American woman to create an antiracist body of work and a blueprint for empathy and praxis through community art. Her sometimes barbed, often provocative, and always steadfast story is now told.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Hearing Luxe Pop explores a deluxe-production aesthetic that has long thrived in American popular music, in which popular-music idioms are merged with lush string orchestrations and big-band instrumentation. John Howland presents an alternative music history that centers on shifts in timbre and sound through innovative uses of orchestration and arranging, traveling from symphonic jazz to the Great American Songbook, the teenage symphonies of Motown to the 'countrypolitan' sound of Nashville, the sunshine pop of the Beach Boys to the blending of soul and funk into 1970s disco, and Jay-Z's hip-hop-orchestra events to indie rock bands performing with the Brooklyn Philharmonic. This book attunes readers to hear the discourses gathered around the music and its associated images as it examines pop's relations to aspirational consumer culture, theatricality, sophistication, cosmopolitanism, and glamorous lifestyles.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Since Iran's 1979 Revolution, the imperative to create and protect the inner purity of family and nation in the face of outside spiritual corruption has been a driving force in national politics. Through extensive fieldwork, Rose Wellman examines how Basiji families, as members of Iran's voluntary paramilitary organization, are encountering, enacting, and challenging this imperative. Her ethnography reveals how families and state elites are employing blood, food, and prayer in commemorations for martyrs in Islamic national rituals to create citizens who embody familial piety, purity, and closeness to God. Feeding Iran provides a rare and humanistic account of religion and family life in the post-revolutionary Islamic Republic that examines how home life and everyday piety are linked to state power.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Hungry for Revolution tells the story of how struggles over food fueled the rise and fall of Chile's Popular Unity coalition and one of Latin America's most expansive social welfare states. Reconstructing ties among workers, consumers, scientists, and the state, Joshua Frens-String explores how Chileans across generations sought to center food security as a right of citizenship. In so doing, he deftly untangles the relationship between two of twentieth-century Chile's most significant political and economic processes: the fight of an emergent urban working class to gain reliable access to nutrient-rich foodstuffs and the state's efforts to modernize its underproducing agricultural countryside.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - In this succinct yet ample work, Zhao Tingyang, one of China's most distinguished intellectuals, provides a profoundly original philosophical interpretation of China's story and also develops a Chinese worldview for the future. Over the past few decades, the question Where did China come from has absorbed the thoughts of many of China's best historians. Zhao, keenly aware of the persistent and pernicious asymmetry in the prevailing way scholars have gone about theorizing China according to Western concepts and categories, has tasked both Chinese and Western scholars to 'rethink China.' Zhao introduces what he terms a distinctively Chinese centripetal 'whirlpool' model of world order to interpret the historical progression of China's tianxia (All under Heaven) identity construction. In this book, Zhao forwards a compelling thesis not only on how we should understand China, but also on how China until recently has understood itself.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Money in Sixteenth-Century Florence offers a comprehensive analysis of Florence's monetary and financial landscape during a pivotal period shaped by the influx of New World silver, political interference, and economic upheaval. This meticulously researched work delves into the intricate relationship between grand ducal policies, banking crises, and the broader socioeconomic factors influencing the city. By reconstructing a detailed narrative from fragmented and complex archival sources, the author uncovers the nuanced dynamics of Florentine coinage and its broader implications for early modern monetary systems. The book stands as a significant historiographical contribution, bridging the gap between numismatic studies and the interconnected political and economic history of the time. Drawing on an extensive range of archival materials, Money in Sixteenth-Century Florence offers readers a rare and precise account of Florentine mint operations, setting it apart from prior studies limited by gaps in data or dated methodologies. The author not only illuminates the challenges faced by the Florentine mint but also contextualizes these within the broader European monetary landscape, where comparable documentation often remains sparse or incomplete. This rigorous yet accessible study is invaluable to scholars of economic history, early modern Europe, and those interested in the interplay of policy, economics, and society in Renaissance Florence. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - In recent years, critics and readers alike have increasingly recognized the unique brilliance of Joseph Conrad's short fiction, elevating it to the pinnacle of his artistic achievements. Marvin Mudrick, in his provocative analysis, even argues that Conrad's finest works are his novellas, suggesting that their compact scope perfectly channels his intense moral and psychological explorations. While Mudrick's view might challenge the centrality of Conrad's renowned novels like Lord Jim or Nostromo, it highlights the enduring power of works such as Typhoon, The Shadow-Line, and Heart of Darkness, which encapsulate Conrad's themes with unparalleled clarity and force. This book delves into Conrad's mastery of short fiction, examining his evolution as a writer and the creative tensions he navigated. Conrad's 'long-short' stories, as he termed them, straddle the line between compact storytelling and the expansive narrative techniques of the novel. With works often ranging around 30,000 to 40,000 words--his ideal length for achieving narrative depth and realism--Conrad forged a form that resonated deeply with his artistic sensibilities, even if it challenged market conventions. By exploring the thematic and structural intricacies of his short fiction, this study reveals how Conrad's tales reflect his quest for a balance between innovation, moral complexity, and reader engagement. Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - A Loss of Mastery: Puritan Historians in Colonial America by Peter Gay offers a brilliant exploration of how early New Englanders wrote their history and what that writing reveals about the Puritan mind. Drawing on figures from William Bradford and Cotton Mather to Jonathan Edwards, Gay shows how colonial historians sought to order the turbulence of settlement, theology, and politics into a providential narrative. At the heart of the book is the paradox that the Puritans, for all their obsession with recording God's design in history, failed to develop the historical consciousness that was transforming Europe in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Written originally as Jefferson Memorial Lectures, Gay's study balances intellectual history with close readings of canonical Puritan texts. It traces the evolution of a historiography that began in heroic self-justification but descended into elegiac lamentations of decline. For Gay, this trajectory reveals both the grandeur and the limitations of the Puritan experiment: the effort to live within a providential frame of history that could not withstand the modernizing pressures of Enlightenment thought. A Loss of Mastery thus illuminates not only the Puritan worldview but also the larger problem of cultural adaptation in the New World. Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - In The Ancient Dialect: Thomas Carlyle and Comparative Religion, the author examines how Carlyle's perspective on religion, language, and human potential both shaped and transcended the intellectual boundaries of his time. The book highlights Carlyle's movement away from traditional Christian dogma to a more inclusive view that embraces the diversity of world religions, myths, and the collective quest for meaning as central products of human expression. Carlyle recognized these varied forms of belief as expressions of a shared human essence, intuitively grasping the notion of a 'global village' long before the term existed. His work placed him at the intersection of emerging modern perspectives, anticipating philosophical shifts from universal truths to pluralistic understandings of reality. Carlyle's idea of language as a mutable, expressive force reflects a philosophy where meaning is not fixed but rather molded by the cultural and historical contexts of the speaker. This book focuses on how Carlyle's writings, especially his engagement with comparative religion, anticipated ideas that later shaped both literary and scientific thought. Carlyle's views on the mysteries of the universe--often explored through Job's questioning stance and metaphors of human limitation--parallel scientific perspectives on the unknown and unknowable. He approached humanity's role in the cosmos with a sense of wonder and humility, challenging the reductive interpretations of positivism in favor of an epistemology that acknowledges the limits of human understanding. By celebrating human creativity and the diversity of religious expression, Carlyle underscored the idea that humans are 'miracles of miracles,' embodying an intellectual and spiritual curiosity that links to the central theme of this study: Carlyle as a visionary whose insights bridge religious tradition and the modernist embrace of an expansive, interconnected world. Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Phil Swing and Boulder Dam is an exploration into the legislative and political intricacies surrounding the creation of Hoover Dam, focusing on the contributions of California Congressman Phil Swing. This study sheds light on Swing's pivotal role in advancing the Boulder Canyon Project Act, while also revisiting widely accepted narratives, particularly Herbert Hoover's claimed influence over the legislation. Through meticulous examination of primary sources, including Swing's papers and Hoover's presidential library records, the book uncovers discrepancies in Hoover's memoirs and other historical accounts, highlighting Swing's earnest advocacy for resource conservation and his clashes with Hoover's preference for private-sector control. The research also delves into the broader socio-political climate of the 1920s, such as the Teapot Dome scandal and the rising progressive movement, which shaped public and legislative attitudes toward hydroelectric power and national resource management. The book contextualizes the Boulder Canyon project within its era, addressing the economic, political, and environmental debates it ignited. It revisits the project's unforeseen outcomes, from its pivotal role in supporting Southern California's war industries during World War II to the subsequent disputes over water allocation between Arizona and California. By tracing the legislation's trajectory and its impact, this study offers a nuanced perspective on the intersection of public policy, conservation, and political maneuvering. For readers interested in the history of American infrastructure, environmental policy, or 20th-century western development, this book provides a compelling addition to the historical discourse, framed by a careful reassessment of the individuals and ideas that brought one of the country's most iconic engineering marvels to life. Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Thomas Jefferson as Political Leader by Dumas Malone distills three public lectures delivered at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1962. Written in a semipopular style for a general audience, the book focuses on Jefferson's evolution into party leadership, a role often seen as incongruous with his broader reputation as statesman, diplomat, and intellectual. Malone highlights how Jefferson--initially reluctant to be characterized as a partisan--only fully acknowledged himself as a party leader after becoming Vice President in 1797, with decades of public service already behind him. The lectures chart his path from opposition figure to president, when the nature of his leadership and circumstances shifted significantly. Malone underscores Jefferson's unusual approach to political leadership. Unlike most figures who achieve prominence through eloquent oratory, Jefferson rarely spoke publicly and never delivered campaign speeches, preferring the written word. Yet even his major documents--such as the Declaration of Independence--were drafted as institutional rather than personal statements. His greatest influence often came through private letters to individuals, which reveal both his guiding principles and his most extravagant views. Jefferson avoided direct appeals to crowds, valued privacy, and eschewed demagoguery, yet he maintained deep personal warmth, hospitality, and intellectual breadth. These qualities--paired with his aversion to mass politics--set him apart from contemporaries like Hamilton and Adams. Malone suggests that Jefferson's effectiveness lay in his unique blend of intellect, personal relationships, and strategic communication, which enabled him to command loyalty and shape a political movement without conventional methods of mass leadership. The book offers an interpretive narrative of how Jefferson reconciled his intellectual, private temperament with the demands of party leadership in a period of fierce political conflict. Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - The Idea of Coleridge's Criticism explores the profound, often polarizing legacy of Samuel Taylor Coleridge as a literary critic, whose influence continues to resonate in modern thought. This study examines the richness and complexity of Coleridge's critical theories, particularly his groundbreaking ideas on imagination, organic unity, and the interplay between form and content in poetry. It navigates the spectrum of scholarly opinions, from skepticism over his philosophical debts to the Germans to admiration for his psychological insights and practical criticism. By analyzing his contributions within the broader context of Romanticism and Western criticism, this book emphasizes Coleridge's role as a thinker who unified poetic theory, philosophy, and literary practice in ways that shaped generations of critical discourse. With a focus on the inherent unity of Coleridge's critical vision, the book contends that his theories extend beyond the fragmentary and eclectic criticisms often attributed to him. It delves into his synthesis of Romantic idealism and systematic analysis, showcasing his ability to reconcile opposites--subject and object, imagination and reason--within an organic framework. Highlighting his enduring relevance, the book underscores how Coleridge's belief in the logic and value of imaginative language provided a compelling defense against the encroachment of scientific positivism in literature. Ultimately, this study positions Coleridge not only as a Romantic theorist or pioneer of depth psychology but as a towering figure whose critical insights retain permanent significance for literary interpretation and appreciation. Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - This study explores the radical poetics of William Butler Yeats and Wallace Stevens, focusing on their contributions to modern literary theory and the unique role of imagination in their works. By tracing their poetic theories within the broader context of post-Romantic criticism, the essay critiques both the romantic idealism of the 19th century and the contextual theories of modern criticism. Yeats and Stevens challenge the notion of poetry as a direct avenue to transcendental truth, redefining the role of the imagination as an artistic force that operates within its own linguistic medium, unburdened by metaphysical or empirical agendas. Their poetics, often interpreted through contrasting lenses such as romantic organicism or the 'visionary' archetypes championed by scholars like Northrop Frye, instead offer a framework where poems are self-contained entities. These works articulate the tension between the impoverished modern imagination and its capacity to find freedom and meaning within the act of creation itself. Through close readings of Yeats's and Stevens's prose and poetry, this essay argues that their works embody a 'poetics of will,' wherein the imagination, though constrained by the limitations of a disenchanted modern world, still achieves a vital cultural role. Unlike their predecessors, who viewed poetry as a conduit to metaphysical revelation, Yeats and Stevens position the poem as an autonomous artifact that captures fleeting moments of freedom and beauty. For the poet, the creative act becomes an assertion of control over the chaos of inner and outer realities, while for the reader, the well-wrought poem offers a brief but profound engagement with the artist's vision. In this way, Yeats and Stevens redefine the purpose of poetry, suggesting its essential contribution to human happiness and cultural resilience in an age marked by existential and aesthetic challenges. Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Trade and Expansion in Han China: A Study in the Structure of Sino-Barbarian Economic Relations reframes the Han empire's celebrated 'Silk Route' moment within a far larger, more intricate economy of exchange and power. Ying-shih Yu argues that trade--in forms ranging from market transactions to 'gift' and 'tributary' exchange--and expansion--military, political, economic, and cultural--were mutually constitutive processes that shaped the Han world. Western outreach to the 'Western Regions' and Central Asia, he shows, was ultimately instrumental to a central task closer to home: managing and transforming frontier societies such as the Xiongnu, Wuhuan, Qiang, and Southwestern peoples. By tracing how imperial gifts, subsidies, settlement, and acculturation (Sinicization) intertwined with frontier security and domestic agrarian stability, Yu reveals the policy logic behind spectacular campaigns and quiet payments alike--and explains why emperors could both push outward and later regret overreach. Moving well beyond narrative, Yu reconstructs the \*structure\* of Sino-barbarian economic relations: the modalities of exchange, the institutional anchors in Han political economy, and the long prehistory in the Spring and Autumn and Warring States eras. Mining dynastic histories and pairing them with archaeological finds--from knife-coins in Korea to Chinese weapons and bronzes in Manchuria and Sichuan--he maps the circuits through which merchants, herders, and officials converted textiles, livestock, and prestige goods into influence and territory. The result is a compelling portrait of a formative 'Confucian' imperial order in practice, where statecraft relied on markets as much as on armies, and where cultural incorporation could be as decisive as conquest. Essential reading for historians of China, empire, and economic history, this classic study offers a durable framework for understanding how great powers govern frontiers--and how exchange, security, and culture coevolve.
