Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - A concise primer to the political, cultural, and social consequences of the perpetual US global war on terror. An entire generation of young adults has never known an America without the War on Terror. This book contends with the pervasive effects of post-9/11 policy and myth-making in every corner of American life. Never-Ending War on Terror is organized around five keywords that have come to define the cultural and political moment: homeland, security, privacy, torture, and drone. Alex Lubin synthesizes nearly two decades of United States war-making against terrorism by asking how the War on Terror has changed American politics and society, and how the War on Terror draws on historical myths about American national and imperial identity. From the PATRIOT Act to the hit show Homeland, from Edward Snowden to Guantanamo Bay, and from 9/11 memorials to Trumpism, this succinct book connects America's political economy and international relations to our contemporary culture at every turn.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - 'An eloquent and essential correction to contemporary discussions of the American working class.'--The Nation From the ongoing issues of poverty, health, housing, and employment to the recent upsurge of lethal police-community relations, the black working class stands at the center of perceptions of social and racial conflict today. Journalists and public policy analysts often discuss the black poor as 'consumers' rather than 'producers,' as 'takers' rather than 'givers,' and as 'liabilities' instead of 'assets.' In his engrossing history, Workers on Arrival, Joe William Trotter, Jr., refutes these perceptions by charting the black working class's vast contributions to the making of America. Covering the last four hundred years since Africans were first brought to Virginia in 1619, Trotter traces the complicated journey of black workers from the transatlantic slave trade to the demise of the industrial order in the twenty-first century. At the center of this compelling, fast-paced narrative are the actual experiences of these African American men and women. A dynamic and vital history of remarkable contributions despite repeated setbacks, Workers on Arrival expands our understanding of America's economic and industrial growth, its cities, ideas, and institutions, and the real challenges confronting black urban communities today.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - In Agrotropolis, historian J. T. Way traces the developments of Guatemalan urbanization and youth culture since 1983. In case studies that bring together political economy, popular music, and everyday life, Way explores the rise of urban space in towns seen as quintessentially 'rural' and showcases grassroots cultural assertiveness. In a post-revolutionary era, young people coming of age on the globally inflected city street used popular culture as one means of creating a new national imaginary that rejects Guatemala's racially coded system of castes. Drawing on local sources, deep ethnographies, and the digital archive, Agrotropolis places working-class Maya and mestizo hometowns and creativity at the center of planetary urban history.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Examining a shocking array of fraud, corruption, theft, and embezzlement cases, this vivid collection reveals the practice of detecting, investigating, prosecuting, defending, and resolving white-collar crimes. Each chapter is a case study of an illustrative criminal case and draws on extensive public records around both obscure and high-profile crimes of the powerful, such as money laundering, mortgage fraud, public corruption, securities fraud, environmental crimes, and Ponzi schemes. Organized around a consistent analytic framework, each case tells a unique story and provides an engaging introduction to these complex crimes, while also introducing students to the practical aspects of investigation and prosecution of white-collar offenses. Jennifer C. Noble's text takes students to the front lines of these vastly understudied crimes, preparing them for future practice and policy work.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - In the 1930s, British colonial officials introduced drama performances, broadcasting services, and publication bureaus into Africa under the rubric of colonial development. They used theater, radio, and mass-produced books to spread British values and the English language across the continent. This project proved remarkably resilient: well after the end of Britain's imperial rule, many of its cultural institutions remained in place. Through the 1960s and 1970s, African audiences continued to attend Shakespeare performances and listen to the BBC, while African governments adopted English-language textbooks produced by metropolitan publishing houses. Imperial Encore traces British drama, broadcasting, and publishing in Africa between the 1930s and the 1980s--the half century spanning the end of British colonial rule and the outset of African national rule. Caroline Ritter shows how three major cultural institutions--the British Council, the BBC, and Oxford University Press--integrated their work with British imperial aims, and continued this project well after the end of formal British rule. Tracing these institutions and the media they produced through the tumultuous period of decolonization and its aftermath, Ritter offers the first account of the global footprint of British cultural imperialism.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - It is widely known that such Western institutions as the museum, the university, and the penitentiary shaped Japan's emergence as a modern nation-state. Less commonly recognized is the role played by the distinctly hybrid institution--at once museum, laboratory, and prison--of the zoological garden. In this eye-opening study of Japan's first modern zoo, Tokyo's Ueno Imperial Zoological Gardens, opened in 1882, Ian Jared Miller offers a refreshingly unconventional narrative of Japan's rapid modernization and changing relationship with the natural world. As the first zoological garden in the world not built under the sway of a Western imperial regime, the Ueno Zoo served not only as a staple attraction in the nation's capital--an institutional marker of national accomplishment--but also as a site for the propagation of a new 'natural' order that was scientifically verifiable and evolutionarily foreordained. As the Japanese empire grew, Ueno became one of the primary sites of imperialist spectacle, a microcosm of the empire that could be traveled in the course of a single day. The meaning of the zoo would change over the course of Imperial Japan's unraveling and subsequent Allied occupation. Today it remains one of Japan's most frequently visited places. But instead of empire in its classic political sense, it now bespeaks the ambivalent dominion of the human species over the natural environment, harkening back to its imperial roots even as it asks us to question our exploitation of the planet's resources. …

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Film Manifestos and Global Cinema Cultures is the first book to collect manifestoes from the global history of cinema, providing the first historical and theoretical account of the role played by film manifestos in filmmaking and film culture. Focusing equally on political and aesthetic manifestoes, Scott MacKenzie uncovers a neglected, yet nevertheless central history of the cinema, exploring a series of documents that postulate ways in which to re-imagine the cinema and, in the process, re-imagine the world. This volume collects the major European 'waves' and figures (Eisenstein, Truffaut, Bergman, Free Cinema, Oberhausen, Dogme '95); Latin American Third Cinemas (Birri, Sanjinés, Espinosa, Solanas); radical art and the avant-garde (Buñuel, Brakhage, Deren, Mekas, Ono, Sanborn); and world cinemas (Iimura, Makhmalbaf, Sembene, Sen). It also contains previously untranslated manifestos co-written by figures including Bollaín, Debord, Hermosillo, Isou, Kieslowski, Painlevé, Straub, and many others. Thematic sections address documentary cinema, aesthetics, feminist and queer film cultures, pornography, film archives, Hollywood, and film and digital media. Also included are texts traditionally left out of the film manifestos canon, such as the Motion Picture Production Code and Pius XI's Vigilanti Cura, which nevertheless played a central role in film culture.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Empire of Convicts focuses on male and female Indians incarcerated in Southeast Asia for criminal and political offenses committed in colonial South Asia. From the seventeenth century onward, penal transportation was a key strategy of British imperial rule, exemplified by deportations first to the Americas and later to Australia. Case studies from the insular prisons of Bengkulu, Penang, and Singapore illuminate another carceral regime in the Indian Ocean World that brought South Asia and Southeast Asia together through a global system of forced migration and coerced labor. A major contribution to histories of crime and punishment, prisons, law, labor, transportation, migration, colonialism, and the Indian Ocean World, Empire of Convicts narrates the experiences of Indian bandwars (convicts) and shows how they exercised agency in difficult situations, fashioning their own worlds and even becoming 'their own warders.' Anand A. Yang brings long journeys across kala pani (black waters) to life in a deeply researched and engrossing account that moves fluidly between local and global contexts. …

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - One of The Chronicle of Higher Education's Best Scholarly Books of 2021 Revolution in Development uncovers the surprising influence of postrevolutionary Mexico on the twentieth century's most important international economic institutions. Drawing on extensive archival research in Mexico, the United States, and Great Britain, Christy Thornton meticulously traces how Mexican officials repeatedly rallied Third World leaders to campaign for representation in global organizations and redistribution through multilateral institutions. By decentering the United States and Europe in the history of global economic governance, Revolution in Development shows how Mexican economists, diplomats, and politicians fought for more than five decades to reform the rules and institutions of the global capitalist economy. In so doing, the book demonstrates, Mexican officials shaped not only their own domestic economic prospects but also the contours of the project of international development itself.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Ernest Mercier (1878-1955) was a key figure in the rise of the technical-managerial class in early 20th-century France. A businessman and technocrat, he sought to overhaul the French political and economic system through his work in modernizing the electric power industry and promoting the creation of a native petroleum industry. As head of France's largest utilities syndicate, Mercier was influential within the business and political elite, forming connections with figures like Marshals Foch and Pétain and Presidents Poincaré and Lebrun. His technocratic movement, Redressement Français (1925-1935), aimed at replacing the political establishment with a results-oriented, expert-driven system. Mercier's career, deeply intertwined with the rise of the managerial class, offers insight into the broader goals of technocrats to modernize France's economy and society while also seeking a shift in traditional political and social values. Mercier's story also illustrates the tensions between modernization and the political climate of the era. Despite his drive for economic transformation, his elitist tendencies and authoritarian associations, including his involvement in the Croix de Feu, demonstrate the complexities of his character. As a technocrat, Mercier aimed to make France more efficient and productive, but his belief in authoritarian methods clashed with democratic ideals. His biography is not only a study of the man himself but also of the broader technocratic movement that sought to reshape France. While his efforts to modernize the French system largely failed during his lifetime, they laid the groundwork for the technocratic influence that would grow stronger in the postwar era. Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - In Elders, Shades, and Women, Richard T. Curley describes the ceremonial life of a Nilotic community in northern Uganda and traces the alterations in its ceremonial activities from the turn of the twentieth century to the beginning of extensive contact between the Langi and Europeans in the 1960s. Setting his analysis within the broad context of Lango social organization, Curley discusses the makeup of the community and shows how the innovations of the colonial period led to changes in kinship relations and residential patterns. He is particularly attentive to the husband-wife relationship and to the changing status of women within a patrilineal system. After describing Lango social organization and the changes that it has undergone, Curley turns to the three complexes of Lango ceremonial activity. One of these, traditionally performed by older men, has virtually disappeared, a victim of altered political relationships. The second set, comprising eight separate ceremonies performed for married women, concerns the problem of incorporating a women into her husband's lineage while recognizing that she was born in her father's. The third complex, centering on spirit possession, has become increasingly popular, and women participate to a much greater extent than men. The author treats his religious material within the framework of structural-functionalism by concentrating on ceremonial activities rather than on belief and by relating the ceremonies to social processes. He departs from structural-functionalism, however, in borrowing heavily from work on the analysis of symbols, and he attempts to describe change rather than analyzing Lango religious activity at a single point in time. Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Rethinking Women's Roles: Perspectives from the Pacific, edited by Denise O'Brien and Sharon W. Tiffany, compiles feminist anthropological and historical studies that reassess how women's lives in Oceania--especially Melanesia--have been represented, lived, and transformed. Originating in ASAO symposia, the volume centers three linked themes: cultural models/images of women, women and power, and historical change. Although conceived for all Oceania, most chapters draw on Melanesian fieldwork and archives (notably Papua New Guinea), with comparative glances to Polynesia and Micronesia. Across the book, contributors critique androcentric classics that muted or omitted women, interrogate dichotomies like public/domestic and nature/culture (e.g., Strathern), and foreground reflexive method: how researchers' gendered assumptions shape 'what the people say.' Ethnographic chapters track women's strategies and solidarities--Lusi women's recourse to redress including suicide as social leverage (Counts); Nagovisi women's gardening, marriage, and matriliny amid cash-cropping (Nash); and Eastern Highlands Wok Meri savings/exchange networks (Sexton). Other essays examine complementarity (McDowell), the making of anthropological knowledge about women (O'Brien), and the pivotal roles of missionary and expatriate women in church-building and colonial frontiers (Forman; Boutilier on the Solomon Islands). Collectively, the volume replaces generic 'types' with situated accounts of agency, labor, ritual, and change, arguing for feminist, reflexive anthropology that treats Pacific women as central actors in social, economic, political, and historical processes. Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - The Invisible Code: Honor and Sentiment in Postrevolutionary France, 1814-1848 explores the transformation of social norms and personal identity during a pivotal era in French history. While the Napoleonic legal codes institutionalized key revolutionary principles like equality before the law and freedom of contract, they also entrenched patriarchal authority, restricting women's rights and elevating male dominance in the public and private spheres. Yet alongside these formal codes existed an unspoken 'invisible code' of honor, which reshaped interpersonal and societal dynamics in the postrevolutionary period. This honor code democratized access to prestige but heightened personal vulnerability, as men contended for respect and status in an open, competitive arena. The book delves into the intersections of law, family, and public life, examining how honor was both enforced by legal structures and internalized as deeply felt shame, driving emotional and political behavior. This 'invisible code' was inextricably linked to gendered experiences of honor and sentiment. Men's pursuit of honor was portrayed as rational and public, while women's lives were framed through sentiment and emotional fulfillment. This constructed dichotomy legitimized the exclusion of women from political and public spaces under the guise of rationality. However, as the book illustrates, emotions--particularly male shame--were central to the social order, influencing decisions and actions in ways often overlooked by historians. By juxtaposing male honor with female sentiment, The Invisible Code critiques the flawed premise of rationality as a male domain, offering fresh insights into the interplay between gender, emotion, and social legitimacy in early 19th-century France. Through this lens, the study reveals how deeply embedded ideas of honor and sentiment shaped personal identities and the broader fabric of postrevolutionary society. Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Latin America: Social Structure and Political Institutions examines the region's historical, social, and political evolution from the colonial era to the modern day. The book traces Latin America's unique trajectory, marked by its early colonial development, the delayed progress of its nation-states post-independence, and the complex interplay between social hierarchies and political structures. The colonial legacy of Iberian rule, characterized by rigid social stratification, concentrated land ownership, and economic dependency, laid a foundation that hindered post-independence progress. Even as independence movements in the 19th century fragmented the region into sovereign states, they failed to dismantle the entrenched colonial social fabric, delaying economic diversification and democratic governance. The book further explores Latin America's tumultuous political history, highlighting cycles of dictatorship, revolution, and reform. The region's regimes, often modeled after U.S.-style presidential systems, evolved uniquely to address local challenges, balancing the need for centralized authority with efforts to uphold democratic principles. Economic potential, fueled by vast natural resources and growing populations, underscores the region's importance on the global stage. Despite setbacks, including political instability and social inequality, the text emphasizes Latin America's persistent quest for balanced development. It argues that the region's ongoing political experiments, blending elements of democratic and authoritarian governance, could offer valuable insights into the challenges of modern nation-building. Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Eleanor M. Gates's End of the Affair: The Collapse of the Anglo-French Alliance, 1939-40 offers a meticulous diplomatic and military history that probes one of World War II's most consequential ruptures: the breakdown of cooperation between Britain and France in the face of German aggression. Spanning from the uncertain early months of the war through France's collapse in 1940, Gates reconstructs how strategic disagreements, mismatched military expectations, diplomatic misfires, and political pressure conspired to undermine the wartime alliance. She draws on previously unpublished documents, cabinet minutes, military plans, and diplomatic correspondence to examine: differences in war aims; conflicts over strategy (especially defense vs. offense); France's internal political fragility; British hesitation; and the cumulative effects of distrust and unmet commitments. The narrative tracks moments like the Supreme War Council meetings, the French political debates over armistice versus resistance, and the fateful decisions about the French fleet and colonial positions. More than a recounting of foreign policy failure, End of the Affair illuminates how alliance politics, national character, and military capacity intertwine under stress. Gates argues that Britain and France entered the conflict with incompatible assumptions about how a modern war should be waged, and that each underestimated the internal challenges the other faced--France's political divisions, fear of defeat, and Britain's constraints in resources and resolve. The book underscores that the collapse of the alliance was not inevitable, but the result of avoidable miscalculations, communication breakdowns, and shifting domestic politics. For scholars of World War II, diplomatic history, and strategic studies, Gates's work remains indispensable: it not only fills gaps in archival evidence, but also serves as a warning about how alliances may fracture even among formally committed partners. Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Owen Lattimore and the Loss of China explores one of the most contentious debates in mid-20th-century American history, centered on the fall of China to communism and the U.S. response to this geopolitical shift. At the heart of the controversy was Owen Lattimore, a distinguished scholar of China and Asia, who became a lightning rod for accusations during the Red Scare. Senator Joseph McCarthy and his allies cast Lattimore as a Communist conspirator responsible for America's 'failure' in Asia, despite the lack of evidence and his persona non grata status in the Soviet Union. The book delves into the complex interplay of political paranoia, Cold War ideology, and the demonization of intellectuals, revealing how Lattimore's advocacy for diplomatic recognition of the People's Republic of China positioned him as both a visionary and a scapegoat. Drawing on newly available archival materials and Lattimore's personal papers, the book paints a detailed portrait of the man behind the headlines, his scholarship, and the historical forces that sought to silence him. Through rigorous investigation, it also examines the broader implications of the era's anti-Communist fervor, from academic freedom to the shaping of U.S. foreign policy in Asia. This work is more than a biography; it is a critical study of American political culture and the enduring legacy of the Cold War's impact on public discourse and policy. Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - The Whole Journey: Shakespeare's Power of Development by C. L. Barber and Richard P. Wheeler offers a sweeping reinterpretation of Shakespeare's career as a continuous process of artistic and human growth. Conceived as Barber's capstone study and completed posthumously by Wheeler from extensive drafts and notes, the book situates Shakespeare's comedies, histories, tragedies, and romances within an arc of development shaped by temperament, historical pressures, and recurring crises of meaning. At its center lies a provocative claim: Shakespeare's oeuvre has a discernible 'human shape.' His plays are not just literary artifacts but responses to psychic needs, dramatizing both the risks of identification with 'other identities' and the forms of mastery that drama makes possible. By placing tragedy at the pivot of this trajectory--where post-Reformation audiences confronted sacred longings in a secular theater--the book redefines the stakes of Shakespeare's achievement, showing how his art disciplines magical expectation while offering communal rituals of recognition. This landmark study makes a dual contribution: it recovers Shakespeare's works as developmental rather than static, and it models a critical method attuned to history, form, and psyche. Close readings across the canon, from Richard III and Titus Andronicus through Hamlet, Othello, Lear, and Macbeth, to the late romances, reveal how Shakespeare continually reworked the tensions between 'nothingness' and omnipotence, surrender and control, comedy and tragedy. The Sonnets serve as a diagnostic of Shakespeare's temperament, illuminating the vulnerabilities and powers that his drama then transforms. Drawing on Reformation history and psychoanalytic awareness as resources for 'paying attention' rather than totalizing theories, Barber and Wheeler create a framework for understanding Shakespeare's genius as both historically situated and profoundly human. The Whole Journey will engage scholars, students, and general readers seeking to see Shakespeare's art not as isolated masterpieces but as a lifelong endeavor to make and mend meaning in a changing world. Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - The Conflict Between the California Indian and White Civilization presents six groundbreaking essays by Sherburne Cook, originally published in the 1940s, which transformed the study of California's Native populations and their interactions with European settlers. Employing a biologist's analytical rigor, Cook approached historical records as if observing a population in a controlled experiment, systematically examining the reactions of indigenous communities to the disruptive influences of missionization, secularization, and Anglo-American settlement. Through meticulous statistical analysis of mission punishment records, food distribution, and settlers' treatment of Native peoples, Cook revealed a sobering narrative of systemic exploitation and destruction. These essays not only challenged the romanticized views of Franciscan missions but also highlighted the devastating impact of Anglo-American policies, igniting passionate debates upon their release. This reissued collection is a timeless contribution to California history and anthropology, widely recognized for its pioneering methodologies and transformative insights. By placing Cook's earlier works on population trends and dietary adaptation alongside his later essays on Indian-white relations, this edition offers a comprehensive look at his evolving perspectives. A seminal work in the field of ethnohistory, it continues to inform and inspire new generations of scholars, shedding light on the profound consequences of cultural conflict in California's past. Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Urban Politics in India: Area, Power, and Policy in a Penetrated System by Rodney W. Jones provides a rare, ground-level study of how politics actually functions in a medium-sized Indian city. Focusing on Indore in the late 1960s, Jones situates local struggles within broader state and national contexts, demonstrating how urban politics is 'penetrated' by outside forces--bureaucratic agencies, state governments, and national parties--that continually reshape municipal power. His analysis follows the city's historical legacy as a princely capital, its post-independence integration into Congress Party networks, and its industrial expansion, which created fertile ground for union organizing, labor machine politics, and factional conflict. By moving across multiple arenas--municipal governance, planning bureaucracies, labor struggles, and community organizations--Jones maps a political system fragmented yet tightly bound to larger structures of authority. The study combines archival sources, newspapers, and intensive fieldwork, including extended interviews with politicians, administrators, union leaders, and community figures. This methodological depth allows Jones to reconstruct Indore's authority structures, the shifting alignments of Congress factions, and the interplay of class, caste, and ethnicity in everyday politics. Especially vivid is his account of the municipal corporation's supersession by the state government, which illustrates the vulnerability of local institutions to external intervention. At once a case study and a theoretical exploration, Urban Politics in India advances the comparative study of urban systems by examining how power is organized, contested, and exercised in a penetrated polity. It is indispensable reading for scholars of Indian politics, urban studies, and development, offering insights into how democratic practices are shaped by the constant negotiation between local actors and larger centers of authority. Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - The Imperial Order explores the dynamics of political power, focusing on the rise, operation, and decline of great empires throughout history. Drawing from Aesop's allegory of the frogs and their kings, the book reflects on the inherent tendencies of rulers to misuse power, often prioritizing personal ambition over the welfare of their subjects. The work examines how unchecked authority fosters oppression and corruption, ultimately leading to the decay of imperial systems. Conversely, it highlights how power, when divided or counterbalanced by independent entities or states, can promote freedom, individualism, and intellectual inquiry. By comparing centralized empires like imperial China or Rome with decentralized systems, the book underscores the dangers of unbridled authority and the virtues of competitive, pluralistic governance. This study of imperial systems delves deeply into the mechanisms by which power consolidates and sustains itself--through deified rulers, bureaucracies, and ideological control. It also analyzes the intellectual stagnation and societal rigidity often accompanying such centralized regimes. Emphasizing the political configuration as the primary force shaping empires, the book argues that power's concentration, rather than mere cultural or economic decline, is the root cause of imperial decay. While acknowledging the complexities and intertwined causes of historical events, the author challenges traditional interpretations by highlighting political power's role in shaping societal trajectories. Grounded in historical comparison and enriched by modern political insights, The Imperial Order offers a nuanced examination of humanity's grandest achievements and gravest failures in the quest to govern itself effectively. Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Keep Out: The Struggle for Land Use Control offers a compelling exploration of resistance to capitalist expansion and political centralization in the United States. This incisive work examines a less commonly considered opposition: American landowners who leverage private property rights and land use policies to challenge corporate and governmental incursions. The book highlights how landowners, from affluent suburbanites to marginalized rural communities, wield these rights to thwart industrial projects, infrastructure developments, and urban expansion, often in defense of their environmental, social, and economic interests. It delves into the paradox of private property as both a cornerstone of capitalist development and a tool for resisting its overreach. Through historical analysis, case studies, and theoretical insights, the book illustrates the tension between the capitalist imperatives of growth and the exclusionary logic of landownership. By addressing issues like environmental degradation, gentrification, and community autonomy, the author reveals the broader implications of land use conflicts for democracy, social equity, and sustainable development. Keep Out not only dissects the systemic forces driving these struggles but also raises critical questions about the future of land use policy, urging readers to consider how democratic values can be preserved amidst the pressures of economic expansion. This thought-provoking study is essential for anyone interested in urban planning, environmental justice, and the dynamics of power in capitalist societies. Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - The California Sea Otter Trade: 1784-1848 is a meticulous study of the early maritime commerce along the California coast, particularly the pursuit of sea otter furs that played a crucial role in shaping the region's economic and political landscape. Adele Ogden's research provides a detailed account of the fur trade's origins, beginning with Yankee merchants and Russian hunters who ventured into California waters despite Spain's restrictive mercantile policies. The book traces how these early traders adapted to the transition from Spanish to Mexican rule, eventually integrating California into broader intra-Pacific commerce during an era of increasing global trade. Ogden's work highlights the dual significance of the sea otter trade: its integration into the Pacific world's economic history and its local impact on California's development. By bringing American goods, people, and influence to the Pacific Coast, this trade laid the groundwork for California's transformation into a hub of United States interests and its eventual political realignment. Supported by an impressive array of archival research--spanning California, New England, Mexico City, and private collections--this book offers an essential resource for understanding California's maritime heritage and the broader dynamics of Pacific trade.
