Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - The cultural fascination with ruins is nothing new. Architects, poets and commentators like Rose Macaulay (1953), Christopher Woodward (2002) and Robert Ginsberg (2004) have extensively and critically investigated the significations of ruins in Western culture. In our lived environments, our media landscapes, and our social media feeds, we are surrounded by ruination: the ruins of war, ecological disaster, post-industrial decline, austerity, social collapse, and infrastructural decline. This issue of Digital Culture & Society addresses the complex thematic field of ruination and decay in contemporary culture. …

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware -Recently, both liberal philosophy of recognition and theories of epistemic injustice have come under attack for failing to reconstruct how marginalized groups find sources of recognition and agency. To understand social struggles well, we need to think of the way in which those within the struggle act towards emancipatory change instead of focusing on the (re)actions of those in power. This volume brings together leading scholars working at the intersection of epistemic injustice theories and recognition theories, setting out to apply insights from this relation to contemporary phenomena and backlashes in the formation and acts of socially struggling emancipators - also considering ideology critique, epistemology of ignorance, standpoint theory, and theories of consciousness raising. 216 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware -Touch has many layers of meaning, especially so in the affectivity unleashed by humor, where touching spaces often emerge in deconstructive ways that affect the senses, alter sense-making, and generate productive forms of non-knowledge (NichtWissen) and power-lessness (OhnMacht). The study discusses the works of various thinkers, including Friedrich Nietzsche, Sigmund Freud, Frantz Fanon, Helmuth Plessner, Jacques Derrida, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, bell hooks, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, and Achim Geisenhanslüke. Drawing on such critical theories and poetically generated epistemologies of literary works the study illuminates venues for transformative thought while also paying attention to the ethics of dialogicity and the relation between philosophy and literature. 516 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Why are so many ghost stories narrated by men - and what do these tales reveal about ideas of masculinity Anna S. Berger explores how Victorian and Edwardian supernatural fiction reflects anxieties around imperial decline, compulsive heterosexuality, domestic instability, and shifting gender roles. From haunted houses to colonial outposts, male protagonists face spectral challenges to the imperial masculine ideal, paternal authority, and male rational control. By drawing on works by authors like Rudyard Kipling, Elizabeth Gaskell, and Arthur Conan Doyle, this study reveals the ghost story as a site where normative masculinity falters - and alternative visions of male identity emerge.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - How are the histories of art and fashion connected in the global context of world's fairs The contributors to this volume analyze the changing roles assumed by the arts, visual media, handicrafts, and artifacts and investigate the unifying conceptions of the 'Gesamtkunstwerk' in the framework of national representations at world's fairs. They reflect the ambivalent status of Latin American re-/presentations and the artistic and curatorial strategies employed by representatives of (post)colonial or 'peripheral' states. By focusing on transcultural style migrations and aesthetic discourses in a globalized art world, the volume provides a re-vision of international exhibitions and world's fairs from the perspective of a critical art history.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 has destroyed lives, communities, and cities. From the start, images of this war spread across various media platforms. Paintings, photographs, drone footage, TikToks, and Instagram posts shaped how the war is experienced, represented, and archived. In this multidisciplinary volume, artists, scholars, and writers explore how art, media, infrastructures, and material culture respond to and contest the Russo-Ukrainian War.…

Taschenbuch. Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - From a provocative reading of Plato and Aristotle, the Transcendence Theory of Art challenges traditional notions concerning the autonomy of art, essentialism and art as such. As a methodological model, it bridges theoretical analysis and art practice, offering a fresh approach to key areas in philosophy. Christine Stefanie Kunkler introduces original concepts like »Index-ART« and the »Aesthetic Syllogism« while proposing the »Force Field of Art« as an alternative to Arthur Danto's »Art World.« This study explores how a philosophical reflection on texts and images can deepen our understanding of meaning, interpretation, and misinformation in contemporary culture.…
