Trade Paperback. Condición: Used - Very Good. Many critics have explored the homoerotic message in the early portraits of the baroque painter Michelangelo Caravaggio (1573-1610). In this text the authors emphasize instead the impenetrability of these portraits. The tension between erotic invitation and self-concealing retreat le…ads them to conclude that the interest of these works is in their representation of an enigmatic address that solicit intimacy in order to block it with a secret. A psychoanalytic reading of Caravaggio's early portraiture, examining the tension between erotic invitation and self-concealing retreat. Used copy with some wear, some foxing.

Hardcover. Condición: Used - Very Good. Images from the World Between is an engaging survey of circus imagery in twentieth-century American art. In her introductory essay, curator Donna Gustafson chronicles the history of the American circus, showing how and why it came to be an important subject for American art. Through a disc…ussion of a wide range of paintings, sculptures, prints, and photographs, Gustafson examines how the circus has been represented both as a microcosm of society and as an alternative reality. Some artists have been drawn to the abstract beauty of the circus ring, tent, and performances. Others have immortalized individual performers such as trapeze artist Alfredo Codona, animal trainer Clyde Beatty, and aerialist Lillian Lietzel for their physical prowess, grace, and courage. Still others have focused on the darker aspects of circus life, such as the danger inherent in many of the performances and the appeal of the grotesque. The book accompanies an exhibition organized by the American Federation of Arts. Among the artists discussed are Diane Arbus, George Bellows, Rhona Bitner, Alexander Calder, John Stuart Curry, Charles Demeuth, Walt Kuhn, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Lisette Model, and Bruce Nauman. In addition to Gustafson's, the book contains essays by Karal Ann Marling on the postwar revival of interest in circus motifs and on the clown in popular culture, by Ellen Handy on the circus in twentieth-century photography, by Lee Siegel on the circus in twentieth-century literature, and by Eugene R. Gaddis on A. Everett 'Chick' Austin's collection and exhibition of paintings with circus themes. As director of the Wadsworth Atheneum and the Ringling Museum of Art, and as a performing magician, Austin united the worlds of art and the circus. The circus as a focal point of twentieth-century American art. Open copy with light to mild wear, clean pages with tight binding, dust jacket wrapped in Brodart protector.

Hardcover. Condición: Used - Very Good. Foreword by Pari Stave The French Riviera has been a fabled resort formore than a century. As an enclave for the rich and famous, as well as a scenictourist spot, it represents all that is beautiful and amusing. But for many of thetwentieth century's finest painters, sculptors, photographe…rs, and architects it hasbeen much more: a place of potent myth and extraordinary creativity. Picasso, Matisse, Beckmann, Brancusi, Lartigue, Le Corbusier, and Eileen Gray, among manyothers, were inspired to create some of their greatest work on the Cote d'Azur.Thisstudy examines the impact of modernity and the artistic imagination on an idylliclandscape. Touching on the issues of pleasure and escape, work and leisure, anddesire and ecstasy, Making Paradise offers a fresh look at the Cote d'Azur and itshistorical significance as a site for modernist innovation from 1890 to the present.Beginning with the neoimpressionists, moving to the Fauves, and ending with suchcontemporary artists as David Hockney and Faith Ringgold, the book examines thesplendid light and terrain of the southeastern coast of France and the region'sinfluence on the artists who worked and played there. Like the book, the exhibitionit accompanies features unexpected juxtapostitions: masterworks by Bonnard andPicasso with the photographs of Lartigue and Model; the villas of Le Corbusier, Gray, and Mallet-Stevens with designs for the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo; andceramics of Picasso with the found-object constructions of the Ecole de Nice of theearly 1960s.Copublished with the AXA Gallery, New York.Exhibition information: AXAGalleryNew York, New YorkApril 26-July 14, 2001 The French Riviera as Eden and muse for modern artists. Very nice clean, tight copy free of any marks. wrapped in complimentary Brodart dust jacket protector.

Trade Paperback. Condición: Used - Good. In a time of societal transition, women and men around the globe struggleto combine careers and family in new ways. However, conventional work and familystructures and power imbalances between women and men often reinforce traditionalgender stereotypes in both home and office. In an effort… to understand the roots ofgender inequality, Myra Strober and Agnes Miling Kaneko Chan conducted an extensivesurvey of the 1981 graduates of Stanford and Tokyo Universities--parallelpopulations in historically very different cultures. First-hand comments from thegraduates are combined with quantitative analyses for a lively examination of thecareer and family choices of these highly educated women and men. Contrasting therealities of household responsibilities, childcare, and discrimination in theworkplace with the graduates' original expectations, the authors find that the roadto more egalitarian work and family arrangements winds uphill all the way.Theauthors take a fresh look at the widespread belief that U.S. gender equity is lightyears ahead of Japan's. The elite group of Japanese and Americans in their studydescribe surprisingly similar experiences as they faced the job market and beganraising families. In both countries, more balanced gender roles will requireimproved public and business policies, individual strategies, and collectiveaction. he authors take a fresh look at the widespread belief that U.S. gender equity is light years ahead of Japan's.

Hardcover. Condición: Used - Like New. This book examines the innovative work of thirty-four-year-old Scottishartist Douglas Gordon. Gordon is perhaps best known for installations that featureclassic films by directors such as Alfred Hitchcock, Otto Preminger, and MartinScorsese. In each of these works the original film has been… manipulated--sloweddown, mirrored by the use of split screen or dual projection, or had its soundtrackaltered--to emphasize the artist's own signature themes, which include trust, guilt, madness, confession, deception, and doubling.Produced in conjunction with a surveyof Gordon's work at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the book featuresessays by MOCA assistant curator Michael Darling, exhibition curator RussellFerguson, Scottish novelist Francis McKee, and Guggenheim Museum curator NancySpector. Darling's essay places Gordon's work in the context of the Romantictradition. Ferguson's essay looks at Gordon's work to date. It focuses on the issueof trust as it weaves its way from early works such as the performance/installationTrust Me, through his tattoo and instruction works, to more recent works such asFeature Film, which incorporates the Hitchcock film Vertigo. McKee compiles Gordon'sliterary sources into a kind of hybridized text. Spector's essay focuses on theautobiographical nature of Gordon's oeuvre, showing how he shifts between revealingdetails of his personal life--for example, the ongoing List of Names lists all thepeople he has met in a given period of time -- -and obscuring other aspects of hisidentity. Designed by the studio of Bruce Mau in close collaboration with Gordonhimself, this book promises to be the definitive reference on one of today's mostexciting young artists. A survey of the work of the Scottish artist Douglas Gordon. Out of print. Creasing and/or tears on dust jacket.
