Neuware - During the past ten years, evidence has developed to indicate that seawater convects through oceanic crust driven by heat derived from creation of lithosphere at the Earth-encircling oceanic ridge-rift system of seafloor spreading centers. This has stimulated multiple lines of research with… profound implications for the earth and life sciences. The lines of research comprise the role of hydrothermal convection at seafloor spreading centers in the Earth's thermal regime by cooling of newly formed litho sphere (oceanic crust and upper mantle); in global geochemical cycles and mass balances of certain elements by chemical exchange between circulating seawater and basaltic rocks of oceanic crust; in the concentration of metallic mineral deposits by ore-forming processes; and in adaptation of biological communities based on a previously unrecognized form of chemosynthesis. The first work shop devoted to interdisciplinary consideration of this field was organized by a committee consisting of the co-editors of this volume under the auspices of a NATO Advanced Research Institute (ARI) held 5-8 April 1982 at the Department of Earth Sciences of Cambridge University in England. This volume is a product of that workshop. The papers were written by members of a pioneering research community of marine geologists, geophysicists, geochemists and biologists whose work is at the stage of initial description and interpretation of hydrothermal and associated phenomena at seafloor spreading centers.

The book had its genesis in a conference held at Cornell University in the fall of 1990 that was organized by Dud…ley Poston, Paul Eberts, and Michael Hannan, all professors at the time at Cornell. With the very generous financial assistance of David Call, then the dean of Cornell's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Poston, Eberts, and Hannan put together a two-day conference oflectures and papers by human ecologists from Cornell University and elsewhere. The conference focused on sociological human ecology and celebrated the fortieth anniversary of the publication of Amos Hawley's Human Ecology (Ronald Press 1950). Professor Hawley was the keynote speaker at the conference. Many of the authors of the chapters in this volume presented earlier versions at the Cornell conference in 1990. Cornell's Departments of Rural Sociology and Sociology also contrib uted financial assistance; however, without Dean Call's very generous support, the conference would not have been possible. A few months after the conference, Poston and Michael Micklin discussed the possibility of asking the various authors of the Cornell conference papers to revise them for publication in a volume on sociological human ecology. The keynote speaker was to have been Pro fessor Paul J. Flory, and his untimely death just prior to the symposium was a tremendous loss to all of polymer science, in particular to those in terested in elastomeric materials. It is to his memory that this book is dedicated. There has been a great deal of progress in preparing and studying elas tomers since the preceding symposium, which was in 1981. A strildng indication of its depth is the abundance of unexpected riches that others have found in his work - riches reserved for those daring to give serious attention to im…plications that at first sight seem unphysical. A famous instance is that of the de Broglie waves. If, in ac cordance with Fermat's principle, a photon followed the path of least time, de Broglie felt that the photon should have some phys ical means of exploring alternative paths to determine which of them would in fact require the least time. For this and other rea sons, he assumed that the photon had a nonvanishing rest mass, and, in accordance with Einstein's E = h v, he endowed the photon with a spread-out pulsation of the form A Sin(27TEt/h) in the photon's rest frame. According to the theory of relativity such a pulsation, every where simultaneous in a given frame, seemed absurd as a physical entity. Nevertheless de Broglie took it seriously, applied a Lorentz transformation in the orthodox relativistic tradition, and found that the simultaneous pulsation was transformed into a wave whose phase velocity was finite but greater than c while its group velocity was that of the particle. By thus pursuing Einsteinian concepts into thickets that others had not dared to penetrate, de Broglie laid the brilliant foundations of wave mechanics. 136 pp. Englisch.

The concept of Higgs mechanism, like most other scientific ideas, evolved over several years, with many independent and important contribu tions in the sixtees to which Peter Higgs has referred in his historical account in these proceedings. However, it was not until 1967, paraphra sing Weinberg, that 'the right ideas were applied to the right problem'! Higgs mechanism, i.e. spontaneous breaking of local gauge symmetries with scalar particles becoming the longitudinal degrees of freedom of {other wise) massless vector bosons and hence making them massive, is now an integral part of the standard {Glashow-Salam Weinberg) theory of electro weak interactions. Fortunately for us, the structure of the standard theory prevents at least one scalar field from being transformed away. Besides, a school of this class contri butes to the scientific formation of many students from other countries. In view of the success of the first two schools, we intend to foster future international meetings on this subject until interest in it is consolidated in Spain. All the lectures given are published here except those of Professor P.C. Martin whose lec tures have previously been published. It is not exactly clear what these names signify, particularly in chemical engineering. Some have suggested retreading the old war horse 'Bio…chemical Engineering' (or was it 'Biomedical Chemical Engineering). In an effort to demonstrate the on-going activities of chemical engineers in the life science area, we accepted the invitation of the Industrial and Engineering Division of the American Chemical Society to organize the 33rd Annual Chemical Engineering Symposium. We decided to call the symposium, Chemical Engineering in Medicine and Biology, and hence avoided the problem of having to decide which 'bio' prefix to use. Many chemical engineers in the academic and industrial world were contacted. From these contacts and a good deal of publicity arose the Symposium. The two-day meeting was held at the University of Cincinnati in the Losantiville Room of the Student Union Building on October 20-21, 1966. Twenty-one papers were presented on topics relating chemical engineering to medicine and biology. Tile papers were representation al of the scope of the activities across the country with presenters coming from Washington, California, Massachusetts, New York, South Carolina, Wisconsin, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Indiana and Texas. If man and placental mammals represent the quin tessence of immunoresponsiveness with complex interdependent path ways, the less elaborate but fully functional systems of immunity in 'lower' animals proffer insights applicable to immediate con cerns in medicine. Recent approaches to organ transplantation, immunotherapy of cancer and repair of immunodeficiency diseases, to name just a few areas, have depended greatly on phylogenetic per spectives. In a larger sense, intelligent wildlife conservation, utilization of food resources, and adequate environmental protection all hinge on knowing how diverse species survive or otherwise suc cumb to insults, injuries, and disease. The phylogenetic immunologist also seeks detailed information on the structure of the immunoglobulins which relates directly to the evolutionary history of living animals. Perhaps genetic mech anisms responsible for the evolution of these proteins may be re vealed as spin-off information. The vast number of immunoglobulin specificities and effector structures, coupled with the remarkable phylogenetic conservation of certain polypeptide regions, makes these molecules especially useful to protein chemists as well as immunologists. 504 pp. Englisch.

The functions that must take place in the small estate-type wine cellar and the controls that can be realistically exercised by winemasters are essential in the creation of superior products. Hence, the book is divided conceptually into the following categories: nonhuman primates, hunters… and gatherers, nomads, swidden agriculturalists, peas ant farmers, religious isolates, and modern and urban aggregates. While many of these populations have experienced (and are experiencing) ac culturation as a result of contact with technologically more advanced groups, the genetic structures described in this volume attempt to recon struct the traditional patterns as well as genetic changes because of con tact. Most chapters also integrate biological (genetic), social, and de mographic data within an ecological frame thus presenting a holistic view of the population structures of ecologically distinct groups. The first chapter examines the body of early nonhuman primate lit erature that emphasized ecological determinism in effecting the popula tion structure of our primate ancestors-relatives. It also examines more recent literature (since 1970) in which it became apparent that greater flexibility exists in primate social structure within specific environmental frameworks. Thus, it appears that our nonhuman primate evolutionary heritage is not one of ecological determinism in social organization but one of flexibility and rapid change suggesting the evolutionary success of our species is based upon a system of flexibility and that social ad aptations can be accomplished in a number of diverse ways. 544 pp. Englisch.

Recent findings of both electron-transfer processes and magnetic exchange-interactions in polyoxometalates with increasing nuclearities, topologies, and dimensionalities, and with combinations of different magnetic metal ions and/or organic moieties in the same lattice attract strong attention towards the design of nano-composites, since the assemblies of metal-oxide lattices ranging from insulators to superconductors form the basis of electronic devices and machines in present-day industries. The editors organized the symposium, Polyoxometalate Chemistry for Nano-Composite Design at the Pacifichem 2000 Congress, held in Honolulu on December 17 19, 2000. Chemists from several international polyoxometalate research groups discussed recent results, including: controlled self-organization processes for the preparation of nano-composites; electronic interactions in magnetic mixed-valence cryptands and coronands; synthesis of the novel polyoxometalates with topological or biological significance; systematic investigations in acid-base and/or redox catalysis for organic transformations; and electronic properties in materials science. It became evident during the symposium that the rapidly growing field of polyoxometalates has important properties pertinent to nano-composites. It is therefore easy for polyoxometalate chemists to envisage a bottom-up approach for their design starting from individual small-size molecules and moieties which possess their own functionalities relevant to electronic/magnetic devices (ferromagnetism, semiconductivity, prot- conductivity, and display), medicine (antitumoral, antiviral, and antimicrobacterial activities), and catalysis. 244 pp. Englisch.

The origins of this book can be traced to the teaching of a Renal Pathophysiology course at the Washington University School of Medicine, beginning in the mid-1960s. When changes in the medical school curriculum took place in the early 1970s, an effort was made to synthesize the minimum core curriculum for sophomore medical students, and the distillation of 'essential material' to be covered in the area of renal pathophysiology led to the development of the first edition of a renal syllabus. This syllabus has been used in our department since 1974, and, following some of the recommendations and critiques of students and faculty, it has been entirely reworked many times to improve its effectiveness and value. This book is a direct extension of that syllabus, integrated with contri butions from faculty members in our Renal Division, and expanded to include a section on therapy in most chapters. Armenteros, D. Bugg, P. Dalpiaz, U. Gastaldi, K. Kilian, R. Klapisch, P. Lefevre, D. M6hl, S. Polikanov, B. Povh and J.M. Richard. It was attended by 101 physicists from 44 insti tutions and 14 countries, representing one third of the LEAR users. Thjs Workshop was the first general meeting of the LEAR commu nity after the approval of the CERN Low Energy Antiproton Ring faci lity and of the experiments scheduled there for the initial period of oper&tion. It was organized for three main purposes: (i) to review the field of low energy antiproton physics, the initial LEAR experimental programme and the status of preparation of the approved experiments; (ii) to review the facility and the progress in its construction, and to discuss the conditions of its operation; (iii) to discuss future developments of the facility and of the experi mental programme. These Proceedings contain the papers presented in Erice both orally and in the poster session, which displayed also contributions from colleagues who unfortunately could not attend the Workshop. Understanding these processes is critical in order for them to be subject to human control. The building of theoretical or computational…models of them puts them into a theoretical framework in terms of which the behavior of the system can be understood on a detailed level. Theoretical and computational models are often capable of giving descriptions of interfacial phenomena that are more detailed, on a molecular level, than can be obtained through experimental observation. Advances in computer hardware have also made possible the treatment of larger and chemically more interesting systems. The study of interfacial phenomena is a multi-disciplinary endeavor which requires collaboration and communication among researchers in different fields and across different types of institutions. Because there are many important problems in this field much effort is being expended to understand these processes by industrial laboratories as well as by groups at universities. Because of this void the First Brook Lodge Symposium on Anti Atherosclerosis Drug Discovery was convened at Brook Lodge in Augusta, Michigan, August 13-15, 1975. The symposium was sponsored by The Upjohn Company and was international in scope, with investi gators attending from such countries as England, Japan, Belgium, and Italy. The symposium focused on the problems associated with the discovery and evaluation of new drugs effective in preventing or reversing atherosclerosis. The thrust of material is centered around animal models useful as tools in the search and evaluation of new drugs. Broadly categorized, the models are nonhuman primates, rabbits, rodents, quail, and tissue culture. The material is a mix of studies on serum lipids and, more importantly, of studies on the artery, irrespective of serum lipid levels. The prevention of arterial lesions, not reduction of serum lipids, is emphasized. A review of all anti-atherosclerotic agents, with the exception of hypolipidemic agents, is included in this volume of the proceedings of the symposium. 480 pp. Englisch.
